How ASCORIL D PLUS SYRUP 100 ML Works

• Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the brain and raises the threshold at which the cough reflex fires, so a dry cough is triggered less easily.
• Chlorpheniramine blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is the chemical the body releases during an allergic response, and blocking its action eases sneezing, a running nose and itchy, watery eyes. Chlorpheniramine also reaches the brain, which accounts for the drowsiness patients report.
• Phenylephrine narrows the small blood vessels in the lining of the nose. The swelling reduces and a blocked nose clears.

Drowsiness comes from the chlorpheniramine and is the effect reported most often. Phenylephrine works in the opposite direction and can raise blood pressure and cause a fast heartbeat, restlessness or difficulty sleeping, so sedation and agitation can both appear in the same person. Effects that need prompt medical attention include difficulty breathing, a widespread rash or hives, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, hallucinations, marked palpitations or difficulty passing urine. A cough that lasts beyond a week, returns after settling, or arrives with fever, chest pain or breathlessness needs assessment rather than a longer course of syrup.

• If you miss a dose of Ascoril D Plus Syrup, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

• Store the bottle at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. The storage instruction printed on the carton of the exact pack should be followed.

• Shake the bottle and measure every dose with the cup or spoon supplied
• Check the label, since Ascoril D Plus and Ascoril D Junior contain different amounts of dextromethorphan
• Avoid driving and machinery until the level of drowsiness is known
• Avoid alcohol during the course, as it adds to the sedation
