How AUGMENTIN ES SYRUP 50 ML Works

• The two ingredients work as a team. Amoxicillin kills bacteria by blocking the building of their protective cell walls, causing the bacteria to break apart and die. Some bacteria defend themselves by producing an enzyme (beta-lactamase) that destroys amoxicillin; clavulanic acid blocks this enzyme, "shielding" the amoxicillin so it can work against these otherwise resistant bacteria. The high amoxicillin content in the ES formulation also helps overcome bacteria that are less sensitive to standard doses, such as certain strains causing ear infections.

Common: diarrhoea (more likely with this high-strength formulation), nausea, vomiting, and mild stomach upset. A mild skin rash and, in children, nappy-area or oral thrush (fungal infection) can occur.Serious (seek medical attention): signs of an allergic reaction — widespread rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing; severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea (which can occur during or even weeks after treatment and may indicate a serious bowel infection); yellowing of the skin or eyes (rare liver effects); or unusual bruising. Stop the medicine and contact a doctor if these appear.
