Inform your doctorBiovorin 15 mg tablet can interact with antiepileptic drugs such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone, potentially lowering their blood levels and seizure control.
Biovorin 15 mg tablet contains calcium folinate (also known as calcium leucovorin), a form of folinic acid. It is a reduced folate used mainly as a rescue agent with certain chemotherapy drugs, especially high‑dose methotrexate, to protect normal cells from excessive toxicity. It may also be used to reduce toxicity from other folic acid antagonists in specific clinical settings as directed by a specialist.
Biovorin provides folinic acid, an active form of folate that bypasses the enzyme blocked by drugs like methotrexate. Methotrexate inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, reducing the formation of tetrahydrofolate needed for DNA synthesis. Folinic acid can be used directly by cells, helping normal tissues recover from antifolate toxicity while allowing the anticancer effect of methotrexate or related drugs to continue.
Biovorin 15 mg tablet is primarily used as leucovorin rescue after high‑dose methotrexate therapy in various cancers such as osteosarcoma, certain leukemias, and lymphomas, according to protocol. It may also be used to reduce or prevent toxicity from other folate antagonists like trimethoprim or pyrimethamine in selected cases, and in some regimens it is combined with fluorouracil to enhance anticancer activity. All uses are protocol‑driven and require specialist supervision.
No. Biovorin contains folinic acid, which is different from standard folic acid supplements used for nutritional deficiency or routine pregnancy support. It is intended for specific medical indications, mainly related to chemotherapy or folate antagonist toxicity. It should not be used as a general vitamin supplement unless your doctor explicitly prescribes it for a particular reason.
Biovorin is generally well tolerated, but some patients may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, headache, insomnia, irritability, or skin rash. Serious allergic reactions are rare but possible and may present with breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or dizziness. Many symptoms occurring during treatment are often due to the primary chemotherapy drug rather than Biovorin itself. Any new or severe symptom should be reported to your healthcare provider promptly.
Use of Biovorin 15 mg tablet during pregnancy must be carefully evaluated by a specialist. In oncology, it may be used when necessary as part of a chemotherapy protocol, where the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It should not be taken as a routine pregnancy supplement without clear medical indication. Pregnant patients receiving chemotherapy or folate antagonists should be managed in a specialized setting with close monitoring.
Information on the excretion of folinic acid into breast milk is limited, but folate derivatives can pass into milk. When Biovorin is used in the context of chemotherapy or high‑risk treatments, breastfeeding is often not recommended due to the associated cytotoxic drugs rather than Biovorin itself. The decision to continue or stop breastfeeding should be made by your doctor after assessing the overall treatment plan and potential risks to the infant.
Yes. Biovorin can reduce blood levels of certain antiepileptic drugs such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone, potentially lowering seizure control. When used with fluorouracil, it can enhance both the therapeutic and toxic effects of fluorouracil. It also modifies the effects of methotrexate and other folate antagonists as part of planned rescue therapy. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, including over‑the‑counter products and herbal supplements, before starting Biovorin.
If you miss or delay a scheduled dose of Biovorin during a methotrexate rescue or similar protocol, contact your oncology team or treating physician immediately. The timing of Biovorin in relation to methotrexate is critical for safety, and missed doses should not be managed independently at home. Do not double the next dose or change the schedule on your own without medical guidance.
Biovorin itself is not usually highly nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic, but it is often used in patients receiving methotrexate or other drugs that can significantly affect kidney and liver function. In patients with impaired kidney or liver function, the overall chemotherapy regimen, including Biovorin timing and dose, may need adjustment and close monitoring. Such patients should be managed by specialists with frequent laboratory assessments.
Biovorin alone is not typically associated with significant drowsiness or impairment of alertness. However, patients receiving it are often undergoing intensive chemotherapy and may experience fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or other symptoms from their primary treatment. You should assess how you feel and follow your doctor’s advice before driving or operating machinery. If you feel unwell, dizzy, or very tired, avoid such activities.
