The most important effect is a rise in blood calcium (hypercalcaemia), especially if extra calcium is taken. Early signs: nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, dry mouth, excessive thirst, frequent urination, muscle weakness, tiredness. With prolonged high calcium (seek medical attention): bone pain, confusion or drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, and over time kidney stones or kidney damage. Report these promptly.
Take it once a day, usually in the morning, exactly as prescribed — with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not change the dose on your own; even small changes affect calcium levels.
Calcitriol raises calcium, so your doctor checks your blood calcium (and often phosphate and parathyroid hormone) regularly — more frequently when starting or adjusting the dose.
Only as directed by your doctor. Taking extra calcium, high-dose vitamin D, or certain antacids on your own can cause dangerously high calcium. Tell your doctor about all supplements you use.
These can be early signs of high calcium. Contact your doctor promptly — they may pause the medicine and check your calcium level. Do not keep taking it if these symptoms appear.
Yes. Tell your doctor if you take digoxin (digitalis), thiazide water tablets, or magnesium-containing antacids, as these interact with calcitriol and affect calcium levels. Follow any diet advice on calcium and phosphate.
