How LARETOL CAPSULE 15'S Works

• Vitamin D normally has to be activated in two steps — first in the liver, then in the kidneys — to become calcitriol, the form the body actually uses. Calcitriol is this ready-made active form. It acts mainly on the intestine, increasing the absorption of calcium (and phosphate) from food into the blood, and on bone, helping regulate calcium balance. It also helps control parathyroid hormone, which is often overactive in kidney disease. This is why it works in people whose kidneys can no longer activate ordinary vitamin D.

The most important effect to watch for is a rise in blood calcium (hypercalcaemia), especially if too much calcium is taken alongside it. Early signs of high calcium: nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, dry mouth, excessive thirst, frequent urination, muscle weakness, and tiredness. With prolonged high calcium (seek medical attention): bone pain, confusion or drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, and — over time — kidney stones or kidney damage. Calcium and phosphate levels can also become imbalanced in kidney patients. Report any of these symptoms promptly.
