Composition
The most important effect to watch for is a rise in blood calcium (hypercalcaemia), especially if too much calcium is taken alongside it. Early signs of high calcium: nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, dry mouth, excessive thirst, frequent urination, muscle weakness, and tiredness. With prolonged high calcium (seek medical attention): bone pain, confusion or drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, and — over time — kidney stones or kidney damage. Calcium and phosphate levels can also become imbalanced in kidney patients. Report any of these symptoms promptly.
Take it once a day, usually in the morning, exactly as prescribed — with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not change the dose on your own; even small changes can affect your calcium levels.
Calcitriol raises calcium, so your doctor checks your blood calcium (and often phosphate and parathyroid hormone) regularly — more frequently when starting or adjusting the dose. This ensures the medicine is working without pushing calcium too high.
Only as directed by your doctor. Taking extra calcium, high-dose vitamin D, or certain antacids on your own can cause dangerously high calcium. Tell your doctor about all supplements and over-the-counter products you use.
