Corex T cough syrup is generally prescribed for the short-term relief of dry, irritating, or allergic cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections, common cold, or allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis. It combines codeine, an opioid cough suppressant that reduces the urge to cough, with triprolidine, an antihistamine that helps relieve allergy-related symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. It is not intended for long-term use or for self-medication and should only be taken under medical supervision.
Corex T contains two active ingredients: codeine phosphate and triprolidine. Codeine acts centrally on the cough center in the brain (medulla) to increase the threshold for coughing, thereby reducing the frequency and intensity of cough. Triprolidine is a first-generation antihistamine that blocks H1 histamine receptors, reducing the effects of histamine released during allergic reactions. This helps relieve symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharge, and post-nasal drip, which can trigger or worsen cough. The combined action provides symptomatic relief from dry and allergic cough.
Corex T cough syrup is generally not recommended for young children, especially those under 12 years of age, due to the presence of codeine and the risk of serious side effects such as respiratory depression. In some regions and according to certain guidelines, codeine-containing cough preparations are also avoided in adolescents under 18 years, particularly after tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy or in those with breathing problems. The decision to use this medicine in older children or adolescents must be made by a pediatrician or qualified doctor after careful assessment of risks and benefits. Parents should never give Corex T to a child without explicit medical advice.
Use of Corex T cough syrup during pregnancy is generally avoided unless the potential benefit to the mother clearly outweighs the possible risk to the fetus. Codeine can cross the placenta and, especially with repeated or high-dose use near term, may cause neonatal respiratory depression or withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Triprolidine also has limited safety data in pregnancy. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suspect you may be pregnant, you should inform your doctor before taking this medicine. Do not start or continue Corex T on your own during pregnancy.
Corex T cough syrup is usually not recommended during breastfeeding. Codeine is excreted into breast milk and is converted to morphine in the body. In mothers who are ultra-rapid metabolisers of codeine, high levels of morphine can accumulate in breast milk and may cause serious adverse effects in the breastfed infant, including excessive sleepiness, difficulty breastfeeding, limpness, or breathing problems, which can be life-threatening. Triprolidine may also pass into breast milk and cause sedation or irritability in the infant. If cough treatment is needed while breastfeeding, safer alternatives should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
Common side effects of Corex T cough syrup include drowsiness, dizziness, sedation, dry mouth, constipation, nausea, vomiting, and mild abdominal discomfort. Some people may experience blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, or mild confusion, especially at higher doses or in older adults. Less commonly, allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulty can occur and require immediate medical attention. Codeine can cause respiratory depression, particularly in overdose, in people with underlying lung disease, or in ultra-rapid metabolisers. Long-term or inappropriate use may lead to tolerance, dependence, or misuse. Any unusual or severe symptoms should be reported to a doctor promptly.
Driving or operating machinery after taking Corex T cough syrup is generally not advised. Both codeine and triprolidine can cause significant drowsiness, dizziness, slowed reaction time, and impaired judgement. These effects may be more pronounced when treatment is started, when the dose is increased, or if taken together with alcohol or other sedating medicines. Until you know how this medicine affects you, you should avoid driving, using heavy machinery, or performing tasks that require full mental alertness and coordination.
Alcohol should be strictly avoided while taking Corex T cough syrup. Alcohol has additive depressant effects on the central nervous system and can significantly increase drowsiness, dizziness, impaired coordination, and the risk of respiratory depression associated with codeine and triprolidine. Combining alcohol with this medicine also increases the risk of accidents, falls, and potentially life-threatening overdose. If you have consumed alcohol, you should not take Corex T without medical advice.
Corex T cough syrup contains codeine, an opioid that can be habit-forming if used inappropriately, at high doses, or for prolonged periods. Regular use beyond the prescribed duration may lead to tolerance (reduced effect over time), physical dependence, and, in some individuals, psychological dependence. Abrupt discontinuation after prolonged or high-dose use can result in withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, irritability, sweating, runny nose, abdominal cramps, and sleep disturbances. To minimise these risks, Corex T should be used only as prescribed, for the shortest duration necessary, and under close medical supervision.
Corex T cough syrup should generally be avoided in individuals with known hypersensitivity to codeine, triprolidine, other opioids, or antihistamines of a similar class. It is usually contraindicated in patients with severe respiratory depression, acute asthma attacks, significant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations, or in those who are at risk of paralytic ileus. It is also not recommended in children below the age limit specified by local regulations (often under 12 years) and in breastfeeding mothers. Caution or avoidance is advised in people with severe liver or kidney impairment, head injury, raised intracranial pressure, seizure disorders, a history of substance use disorder, or obstructive sleep apnoea. A doctor should review your full medical history before prescribing this medicine.
If your cough does not improve within a few days of using Corex T cough syrup as prescribed, or if it worsens, you should contact your doctor for reassessment. Persistent cough may indicate an underlying condition such as asthma, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, heart failure, gastroesophageal reflux, or other serious illness that requires specific treatment. You should also seek immediate medical attention if you develop high fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, wheezing, blood in sputum, unexplained weight loss, or if you experience marked drowsiness or breathing difficulty after taking the syrup. Do not increase the dose or extend the duration of use on your own.
