Digeraft syrup is used for short‑term relief of symptoms caused by excess stomach acid and reflux, such as heartburn, acid indigestion, sour or bitter regurgitation, and upper abdominal discomfort. It is commonly used in conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), reflux oesophagitis, and post‑meal acidity. It provides symptomatic relief but does not cure the underlying disease.
Digeraft syrup usually contains sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate. After ingestion, sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a thick, low‑density gel that floats on top of the stomach contents, acting as a physical barrier to reflux. Sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate neutralise existing gastric acid, reducing acidity in the stomach. Together, these actions help relieve heartburn and protect the oesophagus from acid exposure.
Digeraft syrup is primarily indicated for acid‑related symptoms and reflux rather than for gas and bloating alone. Some patients may experience subjective relief if their bloating is associated with acidity or reflux, but Digeraft is not a dedicated anti‑flatulent. If gas, abdominal distension, or discomfort persists, a healthcare professional should evaluate for other causes and consider more appropriate treatments.
Digeraft syrup is generally intended for short‑term or intermittent use. Prolonged daily use without medical supervision is not recommended because persistent symptoms may indicate a more serious condition requiring specific treatment. Long‑term, high‑frequency use may also increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance, altered calcium levels, or excessive sodium intake in susceptible individuals. If you need Digeraft regularly for more than a couple of weeks, consult your doctor for further evaluation.
Digeraft syrup can interact with the absorption of several oral medicines, including certain antibiotics, iron supplements, thyroid hormones, and some antifungals, by altering gastric pH or forming complexes. To minimise interaction, a time gap is usually recommended between Digeraft and other oral drugs. Because the exact timing depends on the specific medicine, you should follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s advice and read the product information of all medicines you are taking.
Caution is required when using Digeraft syrup in patients with kidney impairment. The calcium and sodium content may accumulate or worsen fluid balance and electrolyte disturbances in moderate to severe renal dysfunction. In such patients, use should be strictly under medical supervision, with attention to total daily intake of calcium, sodium, and other electrolytes. Patients on dialysis or with advanced kidney disease should not use Digeraft without explicit advice from a nephrologist or treating physician.
Alginate‑antacid combinations like Digeraft are often considered for symptomatic relief of reflux in pregnancy when lifestyle measures are insufficient. However, safety can vary with formulation, sodium load, and individual risk factors such as pre‑eclampsia, hypertension, or kidney disease. Pregnant women should not self‑medicate for prolonged periods and should use Digeraft only on the advice of their obstetrician or healthcare provider, who will weigh potential benefits against risks and recommend an appropriate regimen.
Digeraft syrup does not typically cause drowsiness, impaired alertness, or psychomotor slowing, because its main action is local in the gastrointestinal tract. In most people, it is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience any unusual symptoms such as dizziness, discomfort, or allergic reactions after taking it, you should avoid driving and seek medical advice.
Most people tolerate Digeraft syrup well when used as directed. Possible side effects include mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, or belching. Because it contains sodium and calcium, there is a theoretical risk of fluid retention, increased blood pressure, or altered calcium levels in susceptible individuals, especially with high or prolonged use. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, itching, or breathing difficulty may occur and require immediate medical attention.
You should avoid self‑medicating with Digeraft syrup and seek medical evaluation if you have severe or persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unintentional weight loss, recurrent vomiting, black or bloody stools, chest pain that may resemble cardiac pain, or if symptoms start after the age of 45–50 without previous history of reflux. You should also consult a doctor before use if you have significant kidney disease, heart failure, severe hypertension, or are on a strict sodium‑restricted diet.
Use of Digeraft syrup in children should be strictly guided by a paediatrician. Safety and appropriate dosing depend on the child’s age, weight, and underlying condition. Over‑the‑counter use in young children is not advisable because symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or feeding difficulties may indicate conditions that require specific diagnosis and treatment rather than symptomatic relief alone.
