• Estradiol is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, where it replaces the oestrogen that the ovaries produce in much smaller amounts after menopause. This helps stabilise the temperature-regulating and hormonal changes responsible for hot flashes and night sweats.
• Restoring oestrogen levels also helps maintain the thickness, elasticity and natural lubrication of the vaginal tissue, easing the dryness, irritation and discomfort that can follow the drop in oestrogen after menopause.

Breast tenderness, headache, nausea, bloating and mild skin irritation at the site of application are the most commonly reported effects. Irregular vaginal spotting or bleeding has also been reported, particularly when this gel is combined with a progestogen. Sudden chest pain, breathlessness, leg swelling or pain, severe headache, or signs of a stroke need immediate medical attention, since systemic oestrogen therapy carries a recognised risk of blood clots and cardiovascular events.
