Most men tolerate it well. The most notable side effects are sexual: reduced sex drive, erectile difficulty, and problems with ejaculation. These affect a minority of users and often improve on continuing or stopping the medicine, though in some men sexual side effects have been reported to persist after stopping. Others: breast tenderness or enlargement, skin rash, and mood changes including low mood. Serious (seek medical attention): breast lumps, pain, or nipple discharge (rare — get any breast changes checked); depression or thoughts of self-harm; or signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips/face, difficulty breathing). Report these to your doctor.
Take one tablet once a day with a glass of water, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Take it consistently — the benefit depends on regular daily use.
Be patient. It usually takes about 3 months of daily use to slow shedding, and 6–12 months to see the fuller effect on hair density. If there's no benefit after about a year, discuss it with your doctor.
The benefit is not permanent. If you stop, DHT levels rise again and the hair gained is usually lost within about 6–12 months, returning to how it would have progressed without treatment. Don't stop without discussing it with your doctor.
Finasteride can cause birth defects in a male fetus, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must not handle broken or crushed tablets. The tablets are coated, so normal handling of whole tablets is safe, but store them away from women and children. Finasteride is not for use by women or children.
Yes. Finasteride lowers PSA (a blood marker used in prostate screening). Always tell any doctor you take finasteride so PSA results can be interpreted correctly. Report any changes in urination to your doctor.
