Most men tolerate it well. The most notable side effects are sexual: reduced sex drive, erectile difficulty, and ejaculation problems — affecting a minority, and in some men reported to persist after stopping. Others: breast tenderness or enlargement, skin rash, mood changes including low mood. Serious (seek medical attention): breast lumps, pain or nipple discharge (get any breast changes checked); depression or thoughts of self-harm; signs of an allergic reaction.
Take one tablet once a day with water, with or without food, at about the same time each day. Take it consistently — the benefit depends on regular daily use.
It usually takes about 3 months to slow shedding and 6–12 months to see the fuller effect. If there is no benefit after about a year, discuss it with your doctor.
The benefit is not permanent. If you stop, the hair gained is usually lost within about 6–12 months. Don't stop without discussing it with your doctor.
Finasteride can cause birth defects in a male fetus, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must not handle broken or crushed tablets. Whole coated tablets are safe to handle. It is not for use by women or children.
