Flusid cream is generally used to treat certain superficial bacterial skin infections, such as infected dermatitis, impetigo, infected eczema, and minor infected cuts or abrasions, when caused by bacteria that are sensitive to its active antibiotic ingredient. It helps reduce bacterial growth on the skin, control infection, and support healing. It is not effective against viral or fungal infections.
Flusid cream is for external use on the skin only. Usually, the affected area should be gently cleaned and dried, then a thin layer of the cream is applied and spread evenly. The exact frequency and duration of use must follow your doctor’s instructions or the product leaflet. Do not cover the area with airtight dressings unless your doctor advises it, and avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and inside the nose.
Flusid cream may be used on facial skin if your doctor has prescribed it for a facial infection, but it must be kept away from the eyes and eyelids. If the cream accidentally gets into your eyes, rinse thoroughly with plenty of clean water and seek medical advice if irritation persists. Do not use it as an eye ointment or for eye infections unless specifically prescribed by an eye specialist.
Topical antibiotics like those in Flusid cream are generally considered to have low systemic absorption when used on small areas of intact skin, so the risk to the unborn baby is thought to be low. However, safety in pregnancy depends on the specific formulation and your individual situation. You should use Flusid cream in pregnancy only if clearly needed and after discussing with your doctor, who will weigh the potential benefits and risks.
When applied to limited areas of intact skin, systemic absorption of the active ingredient from Flusid cream is usually low, so the risk to a breastfed infant is expected to be small. However, you should avoid applying the cream directly to the nipples or breast area where the infant could ingest it. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding, and follow their advice on where and how long to apply it.
Because Flusid cream is applied to the skin and systemic absorption is usually minimal when used as directed, it is generally considered to have a low impact on the liver and kidneys. However, in people with severe liver or kidney impairment, or when used on large or damaged skin areas, absorption could be higher. Such patients should use the cream only under medical supervision, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional.
There is no well-established direct interaction between topical Flusid cream and alcohol, because the medicine acts mainly on the skin and very little is absorbed into the bloodstream when used correctly. Moderate alcohol consumption is unlikely to affect the action of the cream. However, if you have an underlying condition, are taking other medicines, or are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Flusid cream is applied to the skin and does not usually affect the central nervous system. It is therefore not expected to impair your ability to drive, use tools, or operate machinery. If you experience unexpected side effects such as dizziness, severe headache, or visual disturbances, which are uncommon with topical use, avoid driving and seek medical advice.
If you have a known allergy to fusidic acid, fusidates, or any component of Flusid cream, you should not use this medicine. If, after starting treatment, you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as worsening redness, itching, swelling, blistering, or a generalized rash, stop using the cream immediately and contact your doctor. Severe reactions, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat, require urgent emergency medical attention.
Flusid cream may be prescribed for children for certain bacterial skin infections when the doctor considers it appropriate. The safety profile is generally similar to that in adults when used as directed. Parents or caregivers should apply the cream exactly as prescribed, avoid use on large areas or under occlusive dressings unless advised, and monitor the child for any signs of irritation or allergy. Do not use it on a child without medical advice.
If you forget to apply Flusid cream at the usual time, apply it as soon as you remember, then continue with your normal schedule. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and resume your regular routine. Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose, as this will not speed up healing and may increase the risk of irritation or side effects.
The duration of treatment with Flusid cream depends on the type and severity of the infection and your doctor’s assessment. It is important not to stop using it too early, even if the skin looks better, because the infection may return. At the same time, you should not use it for longer than recommended, as prolonged use can encourage bacterial resistance and may increase the risk of side effects. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and seek review if there is no improvement within the expected time frame.
