Infusion-related effects, watched for by the medical team: flushing, hives, fever, chills, headache, nausea, and a rise or fall in blood pressure. Serious (managed by the team): fluid overload (breathlessness, headache, rising blood pressure), especially with heart or kidney problems; and, rarely, severe allergic reactions. As a plasma product, there is a very small theoretical risk of infection transmission, minimised by donor screening and processing.
Only as an intravenous infusion by a doctor or nurse in a hospital setting, at a controlled rate. It is never self-administered, and your fluid status and blood pressure are monitored during the infusion.
To restore blood volume or replace low albumin in specific situations — for example after draining abdominal fluid, in shock, or in certain kidney or burn conditions. Your doctor will explain the reason in your case.
People with heart failure or kidney problems are at higher risk of fluid overload and are monitored closely. Tell your doctor about heart or kidney disease or any past reaction to albumin.
It is prepared from screened human plasma and processed to inactivate viruses, so the infection risk is very low. The team weighs the benefit against this small theoretical risk.
If signs of a reaction or fluid overload appear, the team slows or stops the infusion and treats it. Tell the staff immediately if you feel unwell during the infusion.
