Common: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain; lowered blood cell counts (low white cells, red cells, or platelets — causing increased infection risk, tiredness, or easy bruising); and a higher chance of infections. Because it suppresses immunity, there is an increased long-term risk of serious infections and of certain cancers, especially skin cancers and lymphoma. Serious (seek medical attention): signs of infection (fever, sore throat, persistent cough, urinary symptoms); unusual bruising or bleeding, or black/bloody stools; severe or persistent diarrhoea; symptoms of a rare brain infection (PML) such as confusion, weakness, or vision/speech changes; and signs of an allergic reaction. This medicine carries boxed warnings about serious birth defects/pregnancy loss and about increased infection and cancer risk.
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually twice a day. Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush, chew, or split it, and avoid touching broken tablets or breathing in any powder. Take it consistently (ideally on an empty stomach, at the same times each day) and do not stop or change the dose without your doctor's advice.
Mycophenolate can cause miscarriage and serious birth defects. Women who can become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test before starting and use reliable contraception during treatment and for 6 weeks after stopping; men should use condoms during and for at least 90 days after. Tell your doctor immediately if pregnancy is suspected — never stop the medicine on your own.
Avoid close contact with people who have infections, keep up with recommended vaccinations (avoiding live vaccines unless approved), and practise good hygiene. Protect your skin from the sun with clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen, and report any new skin changes, as skin cancer risk is higher.
Yes. Your doctor will regularly check your blood counts (especially in the first months) and monitor for infection and other effects. Keep all appointments and blood tests, and report fever, sore throat, or unusual bruising promptly.
Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements, as some antacids, certain antibiotics, and other drugs affect mycophenolate. Avoid live vaccines unless your specialist approves. Do not start any new medicine, including over-the-counter products, without checking first.
