Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them. Common side effects of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML:

Gastrointestinal Conditions
Use with caution or avoidLactihep is contraindicated or should be avoided in patients with suspected or confirmed intestinal obstruction, perforation, or acute surgical abdomen.
It takes about 2-3 days to see the benefits of the treatment. Talk to your doctor if you feel constipated even after 3 days of taking LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML.
LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML is used to treat constipation which is presented as infrequent bowel movements, hard and dry stools. It is also used in patients with hepatic encephalopathy (serious liver problem causing confusion, tremors and decreased level of consciousness).
Yes, LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML is a laxative which softens the stools by pulling in water from the body to the large intestine. It is also used to reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood of patients with liver disease.
LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML very commonly causes diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Diarrhea and abdominal pain occur due to high dose and dose should be reduced in such cases. Flatulence may occur during the first few days of treatment and may disappear after sometime. This medicine may also cause electrolyte imbalance. However, this is an uncommon side effect.
You should take LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML for as long as advised by your doctor. You may also take it for as long as constipation lasts, which may be upto a week. For hepatic encephalopathy, the treatment may be longer, may be several months.
LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML should not be given to patients who are allergic to it or are intolerant to lactose (cannot process lactose). It should also be avoided in patients having galactosemia, a rare health problem where body cannot process galactose.
Usually one laxative is sufficient to relieve constipation. In case you need it, your doctor may advise you to take one more laxative along with LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML. The risk of side effects is more with 2 laxatives.
Taking more than the recommended dose of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML may cause abdominal pain, electrolyte imbalance and diarrhea, which may last for a couple of days.
Lactihep is an oral solution containing lactitol monohydrate, an osmotic laxative. It is primarily used to treat chronic constipation by softening stools and promoting regular bowel movements. In patients with liver disease, especially cirrhosis, it may also be used as part of the management of hepatic encephalopathy to help reduce blood ammonia levels and improve mental status.
Lactihep contains lactitol, a synthetic sugar that is poorly absorbed in the small intestine. It reaches the colon largely unchanged, where it is fermented by colonic bacteria into organic acids. These acids increase the osmotic load in the colon, drawing water into the bowel, softening stools, and stimulating peristalsis. In hepatic encephalopathy, the acidification of colonic contents and changes in gut flora reduce the absorption of ammonia and other nitrogenous toxins.
The onset of action of Lactihep can vary between individuals. Many patients experience a bowel movement within several hours after taking a dose, but in some cases it may take up to 24 to 48 hours, particularly when starting therapy. Regular use as directed by a healthcare professional is often needed to achieve a stable bowel pattern in chronic constipation.
No. The dose of Lactihep should not be self‑determined. It must be prescribed and adjusted by a healthcare professional based on your age, indication (constipation or hepatic encephalopathy), stool consistency, and overall clinical condition. Taking more than the prescribed amount can cause severe diarrhoea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance, while taking too little may not provide adequate symptom relief.
Common side effects of Lactihep include abdominal cramps, bloating, flatulence, nausea, and loose stools or diarrhoea. These effects are often dose‑related and may improve after a few days of treatment or after dose adjustment. If you develop persistent or severe diarrhoea, vomiting, signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, reduced urination, or excessive thirst), or blood in the stool, you should contact your doctor promptly.
Lactihep may be used long term in certain conditions, such as chronic constipation or hepatic encephalopathy, but only under regular medical supervision. Long‑term or excessive use without monitoring can lead to dependence on laxatives, disturbances in fluid and electrolyte balance, and potential worsening of underlying conditions. Periodic clinical review and laboratory monitoring may be recommended, especially in older adults and patients with liver or kidney disease.
Lactihep can be used in children for constipation or specific indications when prescribed by a paediatrician. The dose and duration must be carefully individualised according to the child’s age, weight, and clinical status. Caregivers should never give Lactihep to a child without medical advice, and they should monitor for diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and signs of dehydration while the child is on treatment.
When Lactihep is used for hepatic encephalopathy, it should be taken exactly as prescribed, and stool frequency and consistency should be monitored closely. The goal is usually to achieve soft stools without causing significant diarrhoea. Patients and caregivers should watch for changes in mental status, drowsiness, confusion, or worsening jaundice and report these immediately. Regular follow‑up with liver function tests and ammonia levels may be advised by the treating specialist.
Lactihep can generally be taken with many other medicines, but interactions are possible. Because it alters bowel transit time and colonic pH, it may affect the absorption of some orally administered drugs if taken at the same time. It is advisable to inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are using. Your doctor may recommend spacing Lactihep and other oral medications by a certain interval to minimise interaction risk.
If you miss a dose of Lactihep, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one, as this increases the risk of diarrhoea and dehydration. If you frequently forget doses, discuss this with your healthcare provider for possible adjustments or reminders.
People with suspected or known intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdomen, active inflammatory bowel disease, unexplained rectal bleeding, or severe abdominal pain should not use Lactihep without specialist evaluation. Caution is also required in patients with significant renal impairment, severe electrolyte disturbances, or those on fluid‑restricted regimens. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and very elderly or frail patients, should use Lactihep only after a careful risk–benefit assessment by their clinician.
