About LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML

  • Lactihep is a branded oral solution that contains lactitol monohydrate as its active ingredient. Lactitol is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed significantly in the small intestine. Instead, it reaches the colon largely unchanged, where it is metabolised by colonic bacteria into low‑molecular‑weight organic acids. These acids increase the osmotic pressure in the colon, drawing water into the intestinal lumen, softening the stool, and stimulating bowel movements. Because of this mechanism, Lactihep is classified as an osmotic laxative. Clinically, Lactihep is commonly used for the management of chronic constipation, including constipation associated with long‑term illness, reduced mobility, or dietary factors. It is also used in patients with liver disease, particularly those with hepatic encephalopathy, to help reduce the absorption of ammonia and other nitrogenous toxins from the gut. By acidifying the colonic contents and promoting the growth of non‑urease‑producing bacteria, lactitol helps convert ammonia (NH3) to ammonium (NH4+), which is less readily absorbed, thereby lowering systemic ammonia levels. This can contribute to the prevention or treatment of episodes of confusion and altered consciousness in patients with advanced liver disease. Lactihep is usually taken orally and may be mixed with water or other liquids to improve palatability. The onset of action is typically within several hours, but in some individuals it may take longer, especially during the first few doses. The exact dose, frequency, and duration of treatment must be determined by a healthcare professional based on the patient’s age, indication, severity of symptoms, and overall clinical status. Dose adjustments may be required in response to stool consistency, frequency of bowel movements, and the presence of side effects such as diarrhoea. Common adverse effects associated with Lactihep include abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, nausea, and diarrhoea. These effects are often mild and may lessen as the body adapts to treatment or after dose modification. Excessive dosing can lead to significant diarrhoea, dehydration, and electrolyte disturbances, particularly in older adults, children, and patients with underlying renal or cardiac disease. Patients should be advised to maintain adequate fluid intake while using Lactihep, unless otherwise restricted by their clinician. Lactihep should be used with caution in individuals with suspected or confirmed intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease in the active phase, or unexplained abdominal pain. It is not intended for self‑directed long‑term use without medical supervision, especially in patients with liver cirrhosis, renal impairment, or those taking multiple concomitant medicines. Before starting Lactihep, patients should inform their healthcare provider about all existing medical conditions and current medications to minimise the risk of interactions and complications.

Uses of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML

  • Relief from constipation.
  • Preparation of the intestine before any surgical procedure.
  • Treatment and prevention of Hepatic encephalopathy.

How LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML Works

  • LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML offers a gentle approach to relieving constipation by leveraging the power of osmosis. This process involves drawing water into the large intestine, a crucial step in softening the stool. When LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML is ingested, it increases the concentration of solutes in the intestinal lumen.
  • This higher concentration creates an osmotic gradient, effectively pulling water from the surrounding tissues into the intestine. The increased water content softens the fecal matter, making it easier to pass through the digestive tract. This, in turn, reduces the strain and discomfort associated with constipation.
  • Furthermore, the increased volume of intestinal contents stimulates bowel motility, encouraging the natural movement of the intestines to facilitate the elimination process. Unlike some harsh laxatives that can cause cramping or urgency, LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML provides a more gradual and comfortable solution by working with the body's natural mechanisms to promote regularity and ease bowel movements.

Side Effects of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 MLArrow

  • Flatulence
  • Cramps
  • Abdominal distension

  • Dosage for children: The recommended starting dose for children is usually 1 to 3.5 mL of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML syrup per kilogram of body weight per day, divided into multiple doses. The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual's response and should be determined by a healthcare professional.
  • Dosage for adults: The usual starting dose for adults is 15-30 mL of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML syrup per day, taken in two divided doses. The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual's response and should be determined by a healthcare professional.

  • Keep LACTIHEP SYP 200ML away from the reach of children and pets.
  • Store LACTIHEP SYP 200ML at room temperature.

Benefits of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 MLArrow

  • Hepatic encephalopathy is a serious liver condition that impacts brain function, leading to confusion, tremors, sleep disturbances, and even loss of consciousness. LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML helps manage this condition by reducing the amount of ammonia in the blood, a substance known to negatively affect the brain. This syrup also functions as an osmotic laxative, promoting the removal of toxins, including ammonia, from the digestive system by increasing the frequency and volume of bowel movements.
  • By effectively lowering ammonia levels and facilitating toxin removal, LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML plays a crucial role in alleviating the symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy. Consistent and prescribed use of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML can lead to improved cognitive function, reduced confusion, and a decrease in tremors. Furthermore, it can help regulate sleep patterns and prevent the progression of the condition towards more severe states like loss of consciousness. Therefore, LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML acts as a dual-action medication, directly addressing the root cause of hepatic encephalopathy by lowering ammonia levels and indirectly supporting the body's natural detoxification processes.
  • The osmotic laxative effect not only aids in eliminating toxins but also contributes to overall digestive health, which is often compromised in individuals with liver disease. By promoting regular bowel movements, LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML helps prevent the build-up of harmful substances in the gut, further reducing the burden on the liver and supporting its function. Therefore, patients can experience a significant improvement in their quality of life through better management of their symptoms and enhanced overall well-being.

How to use LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 MLArrow

  • Always adhere to your doctor's instructions regarding the dosage and duration of LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML. Carefully read the product label for detailed directions and precautions before using this medication. To ensure accurate dosing, use a measuring cup or spoon specifically designed for liquid medications.
  • Administer LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML orally, following the prescribed dosage. It is essential to shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the medication is properly mixed and the correct dose is administered. This helps to maintain the syrup's consistency and effectiveness.
  • LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML can be taken either with or without food, depending on your preference or as directed by your healthcare provider. However, it is recommended to take it at a consistent time each day to maintain a steady level of medication in your system. This regularity can improve the medication's effectiveness and help you remember to take it.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about how to properly administer LACTIHEP SYRUP 200 ML, consult your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

What is Lactihep and what is it used for?Arrow

Lactihep is an oral solution containing lactitol monohydrate, an osmotic laxative. It is primarily used to treat chronic constipation by softening stools and promoting regular bowel movements. In patients with liver disease, especially cirrhosis, it may also be used as part of the management of hepatic encephalopathy to help reduce blood ammonia levels and improve mental status.

How does Lactihep work in the body?Arrow

Lactihep contains lactitol, a synthetic sugar that is poorly absorbed in the small intestine. It reaches the colon largely unchanged, where it is fermented by colonic bacteria into organic acids. These acids increase the osmotic load in the colon, drawing water into the bowel, softening stools, and stimulating peristalsis. In hepatic encephalopathy, the acidification of colonic contents and changes in gut flora reduce the absorption of ammonia and other nitrogenous toxins.

How long does Lactihep take to relieve constipation?Arrow

The onset of action of Lactihep can vary between individuals. Many patients experience a bowel movement within several hours after taking a dose, but in some cases it may take up to 24 to 48 hours, particularly when starting therapy. Regular use as directed by a healthcare professional is often needed to achieve a stable bowel pattern in chronic constipation.

Can I decide the dose of Lactihep on my own?Arrow

No. The dose of Lactihep should not be self‑determined. It must be prescribed and adjusted by a healthcare professional based on your age, indication (constipation or hepatic encephalopathy), stool consistency, and overall clinical condition. Taking more than the prescribed amount can cause severe diarrhoea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance, while taking too little may not provide adequate symptom relief.

What are the common side effects of Lactihep?Arrow

Common side effects of Lactihep include abdominal cramps, bloating, flatulence, nausea, and loose stools or diarrhoea. These effects are often dose‑related and may improve after a few days of treatment or after dose adjustment. If you develop persistent or severe diarrhoea, vomiting, signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, reduced urination, or excessive thirst), or blood in the stool, you should contact your doctor promptly.

Is Lactihep safe for long‑term use?Arrow

Lactihep may be used long term in certain conditions, such as chronic constipation or hepatic encephalopathy, but only under regular medical supervision. Long‑term or excessive use without monitoring can lead to dependence on laxatives, disturbances in fluid and electrolyte balance, and potential worsening of underlying conditions. Periodic clinical review and laboratory monitoring may be recommended, especially in older adults and patients with liver or kidney disease.

Can Lactihep be used in children?Arrow

Lactihep can be used in children for constipation or specific indications when prescribed by a paediatrician. The dose and duration must be carefully individualised according to the child’s age, weight, and clinical status. Caregivers should never give Lactihep to a child without medical advice, and they should monitor for diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and signs of dehydration while the child is on treatment.

What precautions should I take while using Lactihep for hepatic encephalopathy?Arrow

When Lactihep is used for hepatic encephalopathy, it should be taken exactly as prescribed, and stool frequency and consistency should be monitored closely. The goal is usually to achieve soft stools without causing significant diarrhoea. Patients and caregivers should watch for changes in mental status, drowsiness, confusion, or worsening jaundice and report these immediately. Regular follow‑up with liver function tests and ammonia levels may be advised by the treating specialist.

Can I take Lactihep with other medications?Arrow

Lactihep can generally be taken with many other medicines, but interactions are possible. Because it alters bowel transit time and colonic pH, it may affect the absorption of some orally administered drugs if taken at the same time. It is advisable to inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are using. Your doctor may recommend spacing Lactihep and other oral medications by a certain interval to minimise interaction risk.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Lactihep?Arrow

If you miss a dose of Lactihep, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one, as this increases the risk of diarrhoea and dehydration. If you frequently forget doses, discuss this with your healthcare provider for possible adjustments or reminders.

Who should avoid using Lactihep without specialist advice?Arrow

People with suspected or known intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdomen, active inflammatory bowel disease, unexplained rectal bleeding, or severe abdominal pain should not use Lactihep without specialist evaluation. Caution is also required in patients with significant renal impairment, severe electrolyte disturbances, or those on fluid‑restricted regimens. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and very elderly or frail patients, should use Lactihep only after a careful risk–benefit assessment by their clinician.
