• Cholesterol is largely made in the liver by an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. Atorvastatin blocks this enzyme, reducing how much cholesterol the liver produces. In response, the liver pulls more LDL ("bad") cholesterol out of the bloodstream, lowering blood levels. Over time this also helps stabilise fatty plaques in the artery walls, which is how it reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The high 80 mg dose produces the greatest LDL reduction, suited to those needing intensive protection.

Atorvastatin is generally well tolerated, though muscle-related effects can be a little more common at the 80 mg dose. Common: muscle or joint aches, mild digestive upset (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion), headache, and cold-like symptoms.Others: a mild rise in blood sugar and occasional increases in liver enzymes (checked with blood tests).Serious (seek medical attention): unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness — especially with fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-coloured urine — which can rarely signal serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis); signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, or persistent nausea; or allergic reactions.
