Atorvastatin is generally well tolerated, though muscle-related effects can be a little more common at the 80 mg dose. Common: muscle or joint aches, mild digestive upset (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion), headache, and cold-like symptoms.Others: a mild rise in blood sugar and occasional increases in liver enzymes (checked with blood tests).Serious (seek medical attention): unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness — especially with fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-coloured urine — which can rarely signal serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis); signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, or persistent nausea; or allergic reactions. Report these promptly.
Take one tablet once a day, with or without food. Atorvastatin is long-acting, so it can be taken at any consistent time of day — morning or night — as long as you take it at the same time each day. Swallow it whole with water.
Usually yes. It controls cholesterol rather than curing high cholesterol, and levels tend to rise again if you stop. Continue taking it even if you feel well, and do not stop without talking to your doctor.
Report any unexplained, persistent, or severe muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor promptly — particularly if you also feel feverish or unwell or notice dark urine. Because muscle effects are a little more likely at this high dose, do not ignore these symptoms.
Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which can raise atorvastatin levels and increase the risk of side effects like muscle problems. You should also not drink alcohol, as it can add to the strain on your liver and worsen side effects.
Yes. Your doctor will check your cholesterol to see how well it's working and monitor liver function periodically. Also tell your doctor about any other medicines you take, as some (certain antibiotics, antifungals, and heart medicines) can interact with atorvastatin, especially at this dose.
