Looz syrup is primarily used to treat constipation by softening stools and promoting regular bowel movements. It is also used, under medical supervision, in patients with severe liver disease to help prevent or treat hepatic encephalopathy by reducing the absorption of ammonia and other toxins from the intestine.
Looz syrup contains lactulose, an osmotic laxative. It passes largely undigested into the colon, where it is broken down by intestinal bacteria into organic acids. These acids draw water into the bowel, increasing stool water content and volume. This softens the stool and stimulates bowel movements, helping to relieve constipation over 24 to 48 hours.
The laxative effect of Looz syrup is not immediate. In most people, a bowel movement occurs within 24 to 48 hours after starting therapy, though it may occasionally take longer. Because of this delayed onset, it is not suitable for rapid relief of acute severe constipation or abdominal pain. If there is no improvement after several days, a doctor should be consulted.
Looz syrup may be used for longer periods in chronic constipation or hepatic encephalopathy, but only under medical supervision. Prolonged or excessive use without monitoring can lead to electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, and dependence on laxatives. Your doctor will periodically review the need for continued therapy and may adjust the dose or recommend lifestyle changes to support bowel regularity.
Common side effects include bloating, flatulence, abdominal cramps, nausea, and loose stools or diarrhoea, especially when treatment is started or if the dose is high. These effects are usually mild and may improve as the body adapts. Persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness or reduced urination require prompt medical attention.
Looz syrup contains lactulose and small amounts of other sugars, which may influence blood glucose control, although systemic absorption is limited. People with diabetes should use it cautiously and only on medical advice. Blood glucose levels may need closer monitoring, and the overall diet and antidiabetic medications may require adjustment by the treating physician.
Lactulose preparations like Looz syrup are sometimes prescribed for children with constipation, but paediatric dosing and duration must be determined by a doctor. Careful monitoring is needed to avoid diarrhoea, dehydration, and electrolyte disturbances. Parents or caregivers should never give Looz syrup to infants or children without specific medical guidance.
Lactulose has limited systemic absorption and is generally considered to have a relatively favourable safety profile in pregnancy when used as directed. However, any laxative, including Looz syrup, should be used during pregnancy only on the advice of a healthcare professional, who will weigh the benefits of treating constipation against any potential risks and may suggest non-pharmacological measures first.
While taking Looz syrup, you should avoid using other laxatives without medical advice, as this may increase the risk of diarrhoea and electrolyte imbalance. Adequate fluid intake is important to reduce the risk of dehydration. If you are on a special diet, such as a low-galactose or low-lactose diet, or have diabetes, discuss this with your doctor before use. Alcohol should be limited, especially in patients with liver disease.
You should seek medical help and stop Looz syrup if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, rectal bleeding, black or tarry stools, severe diarrhoea, signs of dehydration such as dizziness or reduced urination, or if constipation does not improve after several days of use. Patients with liver disease should also seek urgent care if they notice worsening confusion, drowsiness, or behavioural changes.
Looz syrup can interact with the absorption of some orally administered medicines by altering bowel transit time and intestinal pH. To minimise potential interactions, your doctor may advise spacing the administration of Looz syrup and other oral medications. Always inform your healthcare provider and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking before starting Looz syrup.
