Common side effects of Looz Oral Solution may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence (gas), and electrolyte imbalance. Less common side effects can include muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, and skin rash. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) or liver problems may occur. It's crucial to consult your doctor if you experience any persistent or severe side effects while taking this medication.

Gastrointestinal conditions

LOOZ Oral Solution contains lactulose, which works by drawing water into the bowel, softening the stool and making it easier to pass. In hepatic encephalopathy, it works by removing ammonia from the gut.
The dosage of LOOZ Oral Solution depends on the individual's condition and response to treatment. Follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
Common side effects of LOOZ Oral Solution include flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Consult a doctor if side effects persist or become severe.

Lactulose is available under various brand names, such as Chronolac, Duphalac and Genlac. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Looz is an oral solution containing lactulose, an osmotic laxative. It is used to treat constipation by softening stools and promoting bowel movements. It is also used in the management of hepatic encephalopathy, a complication of severe liver disease, to help reduce blood ammonia levels and improve related neurological symptoms.
Looz contains lactulose, which passes largely undigested into the colon. Colonic bacteria break it down into organic acids that increase the osmotic pressure in the bowel. This draws water into the intestinal lumen, softens the stool, and stimulates peristalsis, leading to easier and more regular bowel movements.
Looz does not provide immediate relief. In most patients, a bowel movement occurs within 24 to 48 hours after starting treatment. Some individuals may respond slightly earlier or later. If there is no improvement after several days of use, or if symptoms worsen, medical advice should be sought rather than increasing the amount on your own.
Looz may be used for short‑term or longer‑term treatment depending on the underlying condition and medical advice. For chronic constipation or hepatic encephalopathy, prolonged use may be necessary, but it should always be under regular medical supervision. Long‑term or excessive use without monitoring can lead to electrolyte imbalances and dehydration, so periodic clinical review and laboratory tests may be required.
Common side effects include flatulence, abdominal bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea, and diarrhoea, particularly when starting treatment or if the amount taken is high. These effects are often mild and may lessen as the body adjusts. Persistent or severe diarrhoea, signs of dehydration such as dizziness or reduced urination, or significant abdominal pain should be reported to a healthcare professional promptly.
Looz should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to lactulose or any component of the formulation, or by those with galactosaemia when contraindicated by product labelling. It must not be used in patients with suspected or confirmed intestinal obstruction, perforation, or inflammatory conditions of the bowel where laxatives are contraindicated. People with rare hereditary problems of fructose or galactose intolerance should use it only after consulting a doctor and checking the specific product composition.
Lactulose itself is minimally absorbed, but Looz solution may contain small amounts of other sugars such as lactose, galactose, or fructose, which can affect blood glucose control. People with diabetes should inform their doctor before using Looz. Blood glucose may need to be monitored more closely, and the overall carbohydrate intake from the medicine should be considered in the treatment plan.
Looz can be used in children for constipation when prescribed by a paediatrician. The amount and duration of treatment must be carefully individualised based on age, body weight, and clinical condition. Caregivers should not give Looz to infants or children without medical advice, and they should monitor for diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, or signs of dehydration, seeking medical attention if these occur.
Lactulose has minimal systemic absorption, and available data suggest it is generally considered low risk during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed. However, any laxative use in pregnancy or lactation should be discussed with a healthcare professional to ensure that the benefits outweigh potential risks and that constipation is not due to a more serious underlying condition.
If you miss a scheduled dose of Looz, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your usual schedule. Do not take extra amounts to make up for a missed dose, as this may increase the risk of diarrhoea and electrolyte imbalance.
Looz can generally be taken with many other medicines, but interactions are possible. Very loose stools may reduce the absorption of some orally administered drugs. In addition, the change in colonic pH may theoretically affect drugs that are released or absorbed in the colon. It is advisable to inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking so that timing and combinations can be adjusted if necessary.
Along with Looz, measures such as adequate fluid intake, a diet rich in fibre (unless contraindicated), regular physical activity, and establishing a consistent toilet routine can support bowel regularity. Avoiding excessive use of constipating agents such as certain pain medicines or antacids, when medically appropriate, may also help. These measures should be tailored to your overall health status and discussed with your healthcare professional.
