Migrest Tablet is mainly used for the short-term relief of migraine headache and other types of headache or pain when associated with nausea or vomiting. The paracetamol component helps relieve pain and reduce fever, while domperidone helps control nausea, vomiting, and gastric discomfort, and may improve the absorption of paracetamol. It can also be prescribed for other painful conditions such as toothache, musculoskeletal pain, or menstrual pain when these are accompanied by nausea, as determined by a healthcare professional.
Migrest Tablet works through the combined actions of paracetamol and domperidone. Paracetamol acts in the central nervous system to reduce the perception of pain and lower fever by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the brain. Domperidone blocks dopamine receptors in the gut and chemoreceptor trigger zone, which helps reduce nausea and vomiting and promotes gastric emptying. Faster gastric emptying can enhance the absorption and onset of action of paracetamol, which is particularly useful in migraine attacks where gastric stasis and vomiting are common.
Migrest Tablet is not intended for the prevention of migraine attacks. It is designed for acute, short-term treatment of migraine or headache episodes, especially when accompanied by nausea or vomiting. For patients experiencing frequent or severe migraine attacks, preventive (prophylactic) therapies may be more appropriate and should be discussed with a neurologist or treating physician. Using acute pain medicines too frequently can lead to medication-overuse headache, so long-term preventive strategies should be considered instead of relying on Migrest Tablet for regular use.
Migrest Tablet is not recommended for long-term or daily use. Prolonged or frequent use of paracetamol can increase the risk of liver damage, especially in people with pre-existing liver disease, those who consume alcohol regularly, or those taking other paracetamol-containing products. Long-term use of domperidone is also discouraged due to potential cardiac risks, including QT interval prolongation and serious ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in susceptible individuals. Migrest Tablet should be used only for short-term relief as prescribed, and if headaches are persistent or recurrent, medical evaluation and alternative management should be sought.
Migrest Tablet should generally be avoided in individuals with known hypersensitivity to paracetamol, domperidone, or any excipients in the formulation; those with severe liver impairment or active liver disease; moderate to severe kidney impairment without medical supervision; known or suspected cardiac conduction abnormalities, prolonged QT interval, or significant underlying heart disease; moderate to severe electrolyte disturbances such as low potassium or magnesium; gastrointestinal bleeding, obstruction, or perforation; and in patients with prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors (prolactinomas). It is also usually contraindicated in patients taking certain medicines that prolong the QT interval or potent inhibitors of the enzyme CYP3A4. A doctor should always review the individual risk profile before prescribing.
Migrest Tablet should not be combined with other paracetamol-containing products, such as many cold, flu, or pain remedies, because this can lead to accidental paracetamol overdose and serious liver injury. Combining it with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen may sometimes be done under medical advice, but this should not be self-initiated, especially in people with kidney disease, gastrointestinal ulcers, or cardiovascular risk. Always check the labels of all medicines you are taking and consult a healthcare professional before adding any additional painkillers or over-the-counter products.
Common side effects of Migrest Tablet are usually mild and may include dry mouth, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dizziness, and mild drowsiness or restlessness. Paracetamol is generally well tolerated at recommended doses, but rare allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling can occur. Domperidone may cause increased prolactin levels, which in some cases can lead to breast tenderness, galactorrhea (milk secretion), or menstrual irregularities. Serious but less common adverse effects include liver injury from paracetamol overdose and cardiac rhythm disturbances related to domperidone, particularly in high-risk individuals or at higher than recommended exposure.
Migrest Tablet is usually taken on an as-needed basis for acute symptoms rather than on a fixed schedule, so the concept of a missed dose often does not apply. If your doctor has advised a specific dosing regimen and you miss a dose, take it when you remember, provided it is not too close to the time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Always respect the minimum interval between doses as advised by your doctor or indicated in the product information, and do not exceed the maximum number of doses in 24 hours.
Paracetamol overdose can be serious and potentially life-threatening due to acute liver failure. Early symptoms may be nonspecific and include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, sweating, pallor, and abdominal pain. These may improve temporarily, but severe liver damage can develop within 24 to 72 hours, leading to right upper abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), dark urine, confusion, drowsiness, or bleeding tendencies. If you suspect that you or someone else has taken more than the recommended amount of Migrest Tablet or any other paracetamol-containing product, seek emergency medical attention immediately, even if you feel well, because early treatment is critical.
The use of Migrest Tablet in children is restricted and depends on age, body weight, and local regulatory guidance for domperidone-containing products. In many settings, domperidone is not recommended in young children due to safety concerns, particularly cardiac risks. Therefore, Migrest Tablet should not be given to children without explicit pediatric medical advice. In older adults, caution is required because of increased susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmias, drug interactions, and organ impairment. Dose adjustments, careful monitoring, and review of concomitant medications are important in elderly patients, and alternative therapies may be preferred in some cases.
Before starting Migrest Tablet, inform your doctor about your complete medical history, including any liver or kidney disease, heart disease, history of arrhythmias or prolonged QT interval, electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, hormonal disorders, or previous adverse reactions to paracetamol or domperidone. Provide a full list of all medicines and supplements you are taking, especially drugs that can affect heart rhythm, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, other paracetamol-containing products, anticoagulants, and certain antibiotics or antifungals. Avoid alcohol or limit intake significantly while using Migrest Tablet. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or duration, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or new symptoms appear.
