Generally well tolerated for short-term use on small areas. The most common side effect is a local skin reaction — itching, redness, rash, or swelling at the site of application (allergic contact dermatitis, most often linked to neomycin).Serious (stop use and seek medical attention): a spreading rash, severe itching or swelling, blistering, or signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face/lips, difficulty breathing). Using it over large areas, broken skin, or for prolonged periods can rarely allow more of the medicine to be absorbed — neomycin in particular carries a small risk of hearing or kidney effects if heavily absorbed. Prolonged use may also allow non-bacterial germs like fungi to grow.
Wash the affected area with soap and water and dry it. Apply a thin layer (about a fingertip amount) to the wound 1–3 times a day, or as directed. You may cover it with a clean sterile bandage. Wash your hands after, and do not touch the tube tip to the skin.
Only minor injuries — small cuts, scrapes, grazes, and minor burns. Do not use it on deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, serious burns, or large areas of broken skin. See a doctor for these.
No. This is a skin ointment only. Keep it away from the eyes, nose, and mouth, and do not swallow it. If it gets in the eyes, rinse well with water.
If there is no improvement within about a week, or the area becomes more red, swollen, painful, warm, or starts oozing pus, or you develop a fever, stop using it and see a doctor — the infection may need different treatment.
Anyone allergic to neomycin, bacitracin, polymyxin B, or other aminoglycoside antibiotics should not use it. Tell your doctor if you have had skin reactions to antibiotic ointments before, and if pregnant or breastfeeding, use it only on your doctor's advice.
