How NEOSPORIN OINTMENT 10GM Works

• Each antibiotic attacks bacteria in a different way, and using three together broadens the coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Bacitracin and polymyxin B damage the bacterial cell wall and membrane, causing the bacteria to break down, while neomycin (an aminoglycoside) blocks the bacteria's ability to make the proteins they need to survive and multiply. By acting locally on the skin, the ointment reduces the number of bacteria at the wound site and lowers the risk of the cut or scrape becoming infected.

Generally well tolerated for short-term use on small areas. The most common side effect is a local skin reaction — itching, redness, rash, or swelling at the site of application (allergic contact dermatitis, most often linked to neomycin).Serious (stop use and seek medical attention): a spreading rash, severe itching or swelling, blistering, or signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face/lips, difficulty breathing). Using it over large areas, broken skin, or for prolonged periods can rarely allow more of the medicine to be absorbed — neomycin in particular carries a small risk of hearing or kidney effects if heavily absorbed. Prolonged use may also allow non-bacterial germs like fungi to grow.
