Common, especially in the first weeks: nausea, headache, dry mouth, sweating, drowsiness or difficulty sleeping (insomnia), tiredness, and sexual problems (reduced desire or delayed ejaculation). Many of these ease as the body adjusts. Others: dizziness, reduced appetite, and mild digestive upset. Serious (seek medical attention): new or worsening depression, agitation, or thoughts of self-harm or suicide — antidepressants can increase these, particularly in people under 25 and in the early weeks or after a dose change; serotonin syndrome (agitation, confusion, fast heartbeat, high fever, muscle twitching or stiffness, shivering — more likely with other serotonergic drugs); unusual bruising or bleeding; low sodium (confusion, weakness); and signs of an allergic reaction. Report these promptly.
Take one tablet once a day at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow it with water. Take it consistently even before you feel a difference.
It usually takes 1–2 weeks for early signs of benefit and often 4–6 weeks for the full effect. Keep taking it and do not stop on your own. Treatment is usually continued for several months to prevent relapse.
No. Stopping abruptly can cause discontinuation symptoms such as dizziness, "electric shock" sensations, irritability, anxiety, nausea, and sleep problems. If it needs to be stopped, your doctor will reduce the dose gradually. Never stop on your own.
No. You should not drink alcohol while on escitalopram. Alcohol can worsen depression and drowsiness and can add to the risk of side effects.
Mention heart rhythm problems, liver or kidney problems, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, bleeding tendencies, glaucoma, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. List all other medicines — especially other antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, triptans for migraine, tramadol, lithium, and St John's Wort — as combining them can be dangerous. Report any new or worsening mood changes or thoughts of self-harm to your doctor immediately.
