This medication is also used to treat newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) CML in the chronic phase, as well as Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukemia in patients who have shown resistance to other treatments. CML is a type of blood cancer characterized by an overproduction of white blood cells due to an alteration in the Philadelphia chromosome. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a common childhood blood cancer, involves the rapid multiplication and prolonged survival of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Dasatinib works by blocking the activity of specific proteins, including BCR-ABL, which promotes the growth of cancer cells in CML and ALL. This helps to slow down or stop the progression of the disease.
