Most side effects are temporary and generally disappear as your body adapts to the medication. If any side effects persist or cause concern, it's important to seek advice from your doctor.

Other medical conditions
Special precautionsPatients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are at increased risk of hemolytic anemia when exposed to nitrofurantoin and should generally avoid Niftran 100 unless the benefit clearly outweighs the risk and close monitoring is feasible.
NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S starts acting quickly, but you will not start feeling better immediately after taking it. It may take a few days (2-3 days) before you see any improvement in your symptoms. If you do not start feeling better within 3 days of starting NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S or your condition worsens, contact your doctor. It is important to complete the full course of NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S as advised by your doctor, even if you start feeling better.
You should take NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S with your meal or straightaway after the meal. Taking with food helps in absorption of medicine so that it works better. If you take it without food, you are likely to get an upset stomach. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and loss of appetite may also occur. Therefore, to avoid unpleasant side effects, take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S may turn your urine brown or dark yellow in colour. However, you need not worry as this is usually temporary and completely harmless effect. It will disappear once you stop taking NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S. Consult your doctor if you are not sure or still have any concern, but do not stop taking NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S.
Yes, some people may get a fungal or yeast infection known as ‘thrush’ after taking NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S. This is because antibiotics kill the ‘good bacteria’ which help in preventing thrush. You should inform your doctor if you get vaginal itching or discharge after taking NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S or soon after stopping it.
Yes, NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S is a strong antibiotic (or broad spectrum antibiotic), which means that it is effective against a wide variety of urinary bacteria. It is important that NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S should be given to treat or prevent infections that are proven to be caused by susceptible bacteria. This is usually evaluated by a culture test which demonstrates a range of bacteria which cannot grow in the prence of an antibiotic. NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S has seen to be effective against UTI caused by Escherichia coli, Enteroccus faecalis, Klebsiella species, Enterobacter species, Staphylococcus species: (eg S. aureus, S. saprophyticus, S. epidermidis). Some strains of Enterobacter and Klebsiella are resistant to NIFTRAN 100MG CAPSULE 10'S.
Niftran 100 is a capsule containing nitrofurantoin 100 mg, an antibacterial agent used mainly to treat and prevent uncomplicated urinary tract infections, particularly infections of the bladder (cystitis) caused by susceptible bacteria. It is not appropriate for treating kidney infections, prostatitis, or infections outside the urinary tract.
Nitrofurantoin in Niftran 100 is rapidly excreted into the urine, where it reaches concentrations high enough to inhibit bacterial enzymes and damage bacterial DNA. This interferes with vital metabolic processes of susceptible bacteria, leading to inhibition of growth and eventual bacterial death. Its activity is largely confined to the urinary tract because systemic blood levels remain relatively low.
Niftran 100 should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The capsule is usually swallowed whole with a glass of water, preferably with food or milk to enhance absorption and reduce stomach upset. Do not crush or chew the capsule unless your healthcare provider specifically advises otherwise. Do not change the dose or duration on your own.
Niftran 100 begins to exert antibacterial activity soon after it is absorbed and excreted into the urine, typically within a few hours of the first dose. Many patients notice improvement in urinary symptoms such as burning, urgency, and frequency within 24 to 48 hours. However, you should continue the full prescribed course even if you feel better earlier, unless your doctor tells you to stop.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and headache. Urine discoloration to a dark yellow or brown shade can occur and is usually harmless. Mild dizziness or drowsiness may also be experienced. If these effects are persistent, troublesome, or worsen, you should inform your healthcare provider.
Seek medical attention immediately if you develop difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent cough, or shortness of breath, which may indicate lung reactions. Other serious signs include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue, unusual bruising or bleeding, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, severe skin rash, peeling, fever with chills, or joint pains. These may signal liver injury, blood disorders, peripheral neuropathy, or severe hypersensitivity reactions.
Niftran 100 is not recommended in patients with significantly impaired kidney function because inadequate drug excretion into the urine reduces effectiveness and increases the risk of toxicity. In mild to moderate renal impairment, use may be considered only under close medical supervision with appropriate dose adjustment if indicated. Kidney function should be assessed before starting therapy, especially in older adults.
Nitrofurantoin may be used during certain stages of pregnancy when clearly needed and when potential benefits outweigh risks, but it is generally avoided at term (late third trimester) because of the risk of hemolytic anemia in the newborn. Pregnant patients should not take Niftran 100 without medical evaluation. The prescribing clinician will consider gestational age, maternal kidney function, and alternative options before recommending this medicine.
Nitrofurantoin passes into breast milk in small amounts. It is usually considered compatible with breastfeeding for healthy, full-term infants, but it should be avoided if the infant is premature, has jaundice, or is suspected to have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency due to the risk of hemolytic anemia. Breastfeeding mothers should use Niftran 100 only on medical advice and should report any unusual symptoms in the infant, such as poor feeding, pallor, or jaundice.
Yes, Niftran 100 can interact with certain medicines. Antacids containing magnesium trisilicate may reduce nitrofurantoin absorption. Some drugs that affect kidney function or urine pH can alter its effectiveness. Probenecid and sulfinpyrazone can reduce renal excretion of nitrofurantoin, increasing blood levels and toxicity risk. It may also interfere with some laboratory tests, such as urine glucose tests using certain methods. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose, as this may increase the risk of side effects without improving efficacy. If you frequently forget doses, discuss strategies with your healthcare provider to improve adherence.
There is no well-established direct interaction between nitrofurantoin and moderate alcohol intake, but alcohol can worsen side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and stomach upset. Alcohol may also impair immune function and hydration, which can hinder recovery from infection. It is generally advisable to limit or avoid alcohol while being treated for a urinary tract infection and while taking Niftran 100.
It's a seamless experience.
