Oflotas OZ Tablet is generally used for the treatment of acute infectious diarrhoea, dysentery, and other gastrointestinal infections where both bacteria and protozoa are suspected to be involved. It combines an antibiotic (ofloxacin) with an antiprotozoal and anaerobic antibacterial agent (ornidazole), providing broad coverage against many gram-negative bacteria, some gram-positive bacteria, and certain protozoa such as Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia. The exact indication for an individual patient should be determined by a doctor after clinical evaluation.
Yes. Oflotas OZ Tablet contains ofloxacin, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and ornidazole, which has antiprotozoal and antibacterial activity against anaerobic organisms. Because it includes an antibiotic component, it should only be used when a bacterial or mixed bacterial–protozoal infection is likely or confirmed, and always under medical supervision. Using it unnecessarily or for viral illnesses such as common viral gastroenteritis can promote antimicrobial resistance and expose patients to avoidable side effects.
No. Not all diarrhoea requires antibiotic or antiprotozoal treatment. Many episodes are mild, self-limiting, and caused by viruses or dietary factors, and they improve with adequate fluids and oral rehydration alone. Oflotas OZ Tablet is reserved for suspected or confirmed infectious diarrhoea due to bacteria and/or protozoa, especially when there is high fever, blood or mucus in stools, severe abdominal cramps, or a relevant travel or exposure history. A doctor should evaluate your symptoms and decide whether this medicine is appropriate.
The exact dose, frequency, and duration of Oflotas OZ Tablet must be prescribed by a registered medical practitioner based on your age, kidney and liver function, severity of infection, and local treatment guidelines. You should swallow the tablet whole with water, preferably at the same times each day, and it may be taken with or without food unless your doctor advises otherwise. Do not change the dose, do not stop early, and do not extend the course on your own. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose; in that case, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.
Commonly reported side effects with ofloxacin–ornidazole combinations include nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea or loose stools, metallic or altered taste, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Some people may experience loss of appetite or mild skin rash. These effects are often mild and transient, but if they are severe, persistent, or associated with symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, confusion, or breathing difficulty, you should stop the medicine and seek medical attention immediately.
Use of Oflotas OZ Tablet during pregnancy is generally not preferred unless the potential benefit clearly outweighs the potential risks, as assessed by a specialist. Fluoroquinolones such as ofloxacin are usually avoided in pregnancy because of limited safety data and concerns from animal studies regarding effects on developing cartilage. Ornidazole also has limited human pregnancy data. A pregnant woman with diarrhoea or suspected infection should be evaluated by a doctor, who may choose safer alternatives when possible. Do not start or continue this medicine in pregnancy without explicit medical advice.
Both ofloxacin and ornidazole can pass into breast milk to some extent. Because of potential effects on the nursing infant’s gut flora and theoretical concerns about cartilage toxicity with fluoroquinolones, Oflotas OZ Tablet is usually used with caution in breastfeeding women. A doctor may recommend either an alternative medicine with a better-established safety profile in lactation or, if this combination is considered essential, may advise close monitoring of the infant for diarrhoea, thrush, or other adverse effects. Do not use it while breastfeeding without consulting your healthcare provider.
It is advisable to avoid alcohol while taking Oflotas OZ Tablet. Ornidazole, being related to the nitroimidazole class, may interact with alcohol in some individuals and increase the risk of side effects such as nausea, vomiting, flushing, abdominal cramps, or palpitations. Alcohol can also worsen dehydration and gastrointestinal symptoms associated with diarrhoea. For these reasons, abstaining from alcoholic beverages during treatment and for a short period after completing the course is generally recommended.
Oflotas OZ Tablet is usually contraindicated in people with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to ofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, ornidazole, other nitroimidazoles, or any excipient in the formulation. It should be used with particular caution, or avoided, in patients with a history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use, severe kidney or liver impairment, a history of seizures or epilepsy, known or suspected prolongation of the QT interval, or significant cardiac rhythm disorders. Children and adolescents, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers require careful specialist assessment before use. Only a doctor can decide if it is appropriate in these situations.
While using Oflotas OZ Tablet, take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course. Maintain adequate fluid and electrolyte intake to prevent dehydration. Inform your doctor about any history of kidney or liver disease, seizures, heart rhythm problems, tendon disorders, myasthenia gravis, or previous serious reactions to antibiotics. Report symptoms such as severe or persistent diarrhoea, tendon pain or swelling (especially in the Achilles tendon), muscle weakness, palpitations, severe dizziness, mood or behaviour changes, or signs of liver injury (such as yellowing of the skin or eyes) immediately. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and use sun protection, as fluoroquinolones can rarely increase photosensitivity in some individuals.
