How R LOC 150MG TABLET 30'S Works

• The lining of the stomach contains parietal cells that release acid when histamine binds to H2 receptors on them. Ranitidine blocks these H2 receptors, reducing both the amount of stomach juice and its acid and pepsin content.
• Indian prescribing information for ranitidine states that a single 150 mg dose suppresses acid for around 12 hours. With less acid, ulcers in the stomach and duodenum can heal, and the gullet is less exposed to acid in reflux disease.

Side effects with ranitidine are uncommon. Reported effects include headache, which is sometimes severe, dizziness, diarrhoea, skin rash, blurred vision, joint and muscle pain, and changes in liver function tests. Allergic reactions can occur, sometimes after a single dose. Signs include hives, swelling of the face or throat, fever, wheezing, low blood pressure and chest pain, and anaphylaxis has been reported rarely. These need emergency care. Rare effects include confusion, depression or hallucinations, mainly in older and seriously ill people. Others are a slow heartbeat, hepatitis with or without jaundice, pancreatitis, kidney inflammation, low blood counts, hair loss, impotence and breast swelling or discharge. Most of these reverse when the medicine is stopped.

• Stop smoking to help ulcers heal
• Avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers unless the doctor has prescribed them
• Ask the doctor whether another acid-reducing medicine is more suitable

• The product information does not list a food interaction for ranitidine. Alcohol, smoking and foods that trigger heartburn can worsen ulcer and reflux symptoms.
