Reswas SF syrup is a combination cough preparation containing levodropropizine, a peripherally acting antitussive, and chlorpheniramine maleate, an antihistamine. It is generally used for short‑term symptomatic relief of dry, irritating, or non‑productive cough, especially when cough is associated with allergic symptoms such as sneezing or runny nose. It does not treat the underlying cause of cough and should be used only under medical supervision.
Levodropropizine reduces the sensitivity of peripheral sensory nerves in the airways that trigger the cough reflex. By acting mainly at the level of the respiratory tract rather than the central nervous system, it helps decrease the frequency and intensity of dry cough without the degree of sedation or respiratory depression associated with some centrally acting antitussives. It is intended for non‑productive cough where suppression is clinically appropriate.
Chlorpheniramine maleate is a first‑generation H1 antihistamine. In Reswas SF, it helps relieve symptoms related to allergic or irritative components of respiratory illness, such as sneezing, rhinorrhea (runny nose), and nasal or throat itching. Because it crosses the blood–brain barrier, it can cause sedation and impaired alertness in some individuals, which must be considered when performing tasks that require concentration.
Reswas SF is primarily intended for dry, non‑productive cough. In productive cough, suppression of the cough reflex may hinder clearance of mucus from the airways and could potentially worsen the underlying condition. Therefore, it should not be used for productive cough unless a physician specifically decides that temporary cough suppression is necessary and safe in the individual clinical context.
Use of Reswas SF in children must follow a physician’s explicit recommendation. Age and body weight restrictions, as well as dosing intervals, are defined in the approved product information and vary by country and formulation. Antitussives and first‑generation antihistamines require particular caution in young children because of the risk of excessive sedation, paradoxical excitation, breathing difficulties, and dosing errors. Caregivers should never give Reswas SF to a child without medical advice.
Commonly reported side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth, mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea, and occasionally headache. Chlorpheniramine may also cause blurred vision or difficulty concentrating. Most adverse effects are mild and reversible after discontinuation. If severe drowsiness, breathing difficulty, palpitations, rash, or swelling of the face or throat occurs, medical attention is required immediately.
Caution is required when combining Reswas SF with other cold or allergy products, especially those that contain sedating antihistamines, decongestants, or additional cough suppressants. Concomitant use can increase the risk of side effects such as excessive drowsiness, dry mouth, urinary retention, or cardiovascular effects. Patients should consult a doctor or pharmacist before using Reswas SF alongside any other over‑the‑counter or prescription cold, cough, or allergy medication.
Yes, Reswas SF can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and reduced alertness, mainly due to chlorpheniramine. Individual sensitivity varies, but some patients may experience significant impairment in reaction time and concentration. Until a patient knows how they respond to the medicine, they should avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that require full mental alertness. If marked sedation occurs, they should contact their healthcare provider.
Use of Reswas SF during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not routinely recommended and should occur only if a physician judges that the potential benefit outweighs possible risks. Data on levodropropizine in pregnancy and lactation are limited, and chlorpheniramine crosses the placenta and is excreted in breast milk. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their healthcare provider for an individualized assessment and should not self‑medicate with Reswas SF.
If cough persists for more than a few days, worsens, or is accompanied by high fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, blood in sputum, or unexplained weight loss, the medicine should not simply be continued without review. Persistent cough may indicate a more serious underlying condition that requires diagnostic evaluation. Patients should stop self‑medication and seek prompt medical assessment to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
Reswas SF is generally contraindicated or used with great caution in individuals with known hypersensitivity to levodropropizine, chlorpheniramine, or any excipients in the formulation; in patients with severe respiratory failure where cough suppression could be harmful; and in certain conditions where first‑generation antihistamines are not advisable, such as narrow‑angle glaucoma, significant urinary retention, or severe prostatic hypertrophy. Patients with liver or kidney impairment, cardiovascular disease, or chronic respiratory disease should use it only under close medical supervision.
