Rexipra 5 mg is generally prescribed for the treatment of depression and certain anxiety-related conditions, such as generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder, depending on your doctor’s assessment. It contains escitalopram, an SSRI that helps increase serotonin levels in the brain, which can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall emotional stability. Your doctor will decide the exact indication based on your symptoms and medical history.
Take Rexipra 5 mg exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food, at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in your body. Do not change the dose, take extra tablets, or stop the medicine abruptly without medical advice, as this may worsen your symptoms or cause withdrawal-like effects. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose; in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as usual.
It is generally advisable to avoid or minimize alcohol consumption while taking Rexipra 5 mg. Alcohol can increase drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired concentration, and may worsen depression or anxiety symptoms. In some people, alcohol can also interfere with the effectiveness of antidepressant treatment. If you drink alcohol, discuss it with your doctor so they can advise you on safe limits or whether you should avoid it completely.
Use of Rexipra 5 mg during pregnancy requires careful risk–benefit assessment by a doctor. Some SSRIs, including escitalopram, have been associated with potential risks to the developing baby, especially if used in late pregnancy, such as breathing difficulties or withdrawal-like symptoms in the newborn. However, untreated severe depression or anxiety in the mother also carries risks. Do not start or stop Rexipra 5 mg on your own if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy; consult your obstetrician and psychiatrist to decide the safest approach.
Escitalopram, the usual active ingredient in Rexipra 5 mg, can pass into breast milk in small amounts. In many cases, it may be used cautiously during breastfeeding if the benefits to the mother outweigh potential risks to the infant, but this decision must be made by a doctor. Your baby should be monitored for excessive sleepiness, poor feeding, irritability, or unusual symptoms. Always inform your pediatrician and psychiatrist if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed while on this medicine.
People with liver impairment may require special caution when using Rexipra 5 mg because escitalopram is metabolized in the liver. Your doctor may decide to start at a lower dose, monitor you more closely, or choose an alternative treatment depending on the severity of your liver condition and other medicines you are taking. Inform your doctor if you have a history of hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, or abnormal liver function tests before starting this medicine.
In mild to moderate kidney impairment, Rexipra 5 mg may be used with caution, but your doctor will decide based on your kidney function tests and overall health. In severe kidney disease, closer monitoring or dose adjustments may be needed, or an alternative medicine may be considered. Always inform your doctor about any history of chronic kidney disease, dialysis, or abnormal kidney function before starting Rexipra 5 mg.
Rexipra 5 mg can cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or reduced concentration in some people, especially when starting treatment or after dose changes. Until you know how the medicine affects you, avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or performing tasks that require full alertness. If you feel sleepy, dizzy, or mentally slowed, speak with your doctor; they may adjust your treatment or suggest strategies to manage these effects.
If you have a known allergy to escitalopram, other SSRIs, or any ingredient in Rexipra 5 mg, you should not take this medicine. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing, and require immediate medical attention. Inform your doctor about any previous drug allergies, severe skin reactions, or unusual responses to antidepressants so they can choose a safe alternative or monitor you closely.
Some people may notice improvement in sleep, appetite, or energy within 1 to 2 weeks, but full antidepressant or anti-anxiety effects of Rexipra 5 mg often take 4 to 6 weeks or longer. Even if you start feeling better, do not stop the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor. Stopping abruptly can lead to withdrawal-like symptoms such as dizziness, irritability, headache, or sleep problems, and may increase the risk of relapse. Your doctor will guide you on how and when to gradually reduce the dose if discontinuation is appropriate.
Rexipra 5 mg can interact with several medicines, including other antidepressants, certain migraine medicines (triptans), MAO inhibitors, some painkillers, blood thinners, antipsychotics, and herbal products like St. John’s wort. These combinations may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, bleeding, or other adverse effects. Always provide your doctor with a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal or dietary supplements you use so they can check for interactions and adjust your treatment safely.
