Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them.

Metabolic and Cardiovascular Risk
Monitor regularlyRisperidone can contribute to weight gain and metabolic changes, including increased blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides, which may raise long‑term cardiovascular risk.
Few studies suggest that low doses of RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S can be used for anxiety. However, do not take this medication without consulting your doctor. The doctor will suggest the exact dose by weighing the possible benefits and risks associated with this medicine. Take the medication as advised by the doctor and follow the instructions as provided.
RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S is used to treat conditions like psychosis and schizophrenia. The chances of developing medicine-induced psychosis are rare with RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S. However, in a few specific conditions, there are chances where RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S can worsen the psychiatric condition, although it is rare. Do consult your doctor if you do not see any improvement or worsening of symptoms.
Yes, RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S can cause significant weight gain. You should monitor your weight regularly and if there is significant weight gain then you should report your doctor immediately.
RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S sometimes can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems which can affect the ability of a person to drive and use heavy machines. Hence, the patients on RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S are advised not to drive or operate machinery without consulting the doctor.
You should not stop taking your anti-epileptic medicines while taking other medications. Some antiepileptic medications like Carbamazepine, phenytoin may alter the blood levels of RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S and therefore special caution should be ensured while taking these medications. The dose of RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S should be adjusted as needed while taking along with antiepileptic drugs. If you start or stop taking such medicines you may need a different dose of RISDONE MT 0.5MG TABLET 10'S.
Risdone 0.5 contains risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic. It is commonly prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute and maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder (such as manic or mixed episodes), and for managing irritability and aggression associated with autism spectrum disorder. In some cases, clinicians may use low doses as part of treatment for severe behavioral disturbances or as an adjunct in other psychiatric conditions, always under specialist supervision.
Risperidone, the active ingredient in Risdone 0.5, works mainly by blocking dopamine D2 and serotonin 5‑HT2 receptors in the brain. This modulation of neurotransmitter activity helps reduce psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, stabilizes mood, and can decrease aggression and irritability. Its effect develops gradually over days to weeks, and full therapeutic benefit may require sustained treatment.
You should take Risdone 0.5 exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken by mouth once or twice daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. If you are using a mouth‑dissolving or orally disintegrating tablet, allow it to dissolve on the tongue as directed and swallow; do not chew unless your doctor advises otherwise. Do not change the dose or frequency on your own, and do not stop the medicine abruptly without medical guidance.
Some patients may notice improvement in agitation, sleep, or anxiety within a few days, but core psychotic or mood symptoms often take longer to respond. It may take 2 to 6 weeks or more to see substantial benefit, and optimal response can require further dose adjustments and continued treatment. Your doctor will review your progress regularly and decide whether to maintain, adjust, or change the therapy.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, increased appetite, weight gain, constipation, dry mouth, nasal congestion, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Some people may experience extrapyramidal symptoms such as tremor, muscle stiffness, slowed movements, or inner restlessness (akathisia). Elevated prolactin levels can cause menstrual irregularities, breast enlargement, or milk discharge. Many side effects are dose‑related and may improve with dose adjustment or supportive measures.
Yes, although serious adverse effects are less common, they can occur. These include significant weight gain and metabolic changes (increased blood sugar, cholesterol, or triglycerides), orthostatic hypotension, seizures in susceptible individuals, blood clots, stroke (particularly in older adults with dementia‑related psychosis), neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and tardive dyskinesia with long‑term use. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop high fever, severe muscle stiffness, confusion, difficulty breathing, chest pain, sudden weakness on one side, or uncontrolled movements.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this may increase the risk of side effects such as excessive drowsiness, dizziness, or movement problems. If you frequently forget doses, discuss strategies with your healthcare provider.
Alcohol is generally not recommended while taking Risdone 0.5. Both alcohol and risperidone can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired judgment. When combined, these effects may be intensified, increasing the risk of falls, accidents, and poor decision‑making. Alcohol can also worsen underlying psychiatric symptoms and interfere with treatment response. Discuss alcohol use with your doctor, who may advise complete avoidance or strict limitation.
Use of risperidone during pregnancy requires careful risk–benefit assessment. Some data suggest potential risks such as extrapyramidal or withdrawal symptoms in newborns if used in the third trimester. It should be used only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs potential risks to the fetus. Risperidone passes into breast milk, and effects on the breastfed infant, such as sedation or feeding difficulties, are possible. Decisions about use in pregnancy or breastfeeding must be made in consultation with a psychiatrist and obstetrician or pediatrician.
You should not stop Risdone 0.5 on your own, even if you feel better. Psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder often require long‑term maintenance therapy to prevent relapse. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to return or worsening of symptoms and may cause withdrawal‑like effects such as insomnia, anxiety, agitation, or nausea. Any change in treatment, including dose reduction or discontinuation, should be done gradually and under close medical supervision.
Yes, risperidone can interact with several medicines. Drugs that affect liver enzymes (such as some antidepressants, antifungals, and anticonvulsants) may alter risperidone levels. Combining it with other medicines that cause drowsiness, lower blood pressure, or affect heart rhythm (QT interval) can increase the risk of adverse effects. Certain blood pressure medicines, anti‑Parkinson drugs, and other antipsychotics may also interact. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over‑the‑counter products, and herbal supplements you are taking.
