Common: muscle or joint aches, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and weakness. A mild rise in blood sugar and small increases in liver enzymes can also occur.Because this is the highest dose, muscle- and kidney-related effects are more likely than at lower doses. Protein in the urine and, rarely, kidney effects can occur.Serious (seek medical attention): unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness — especially with fever, unusual tiredness, or dark ("tea-coloured") urine — which can signal serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and possible kidney damage; signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, or persistent nausea; or allergic reactions. Stop the medicine and get urgent medical care if these occur.
Take one tablet once a day, with or without food, at any consistent time of day. Swallow it whole with water. Take it exactly as prescribed and do not increase the dose yourself.
Not necessarily. People of Asian ethnicity can have much higher blood levels of rosuvastatin, and the 40 mg dose is generally not recommended for them because of a higher risk of muscle and kidney side effects. Your doctor decides whether this dose is appropriate for you — never start or switch to 40 mg on your own.
Report any unexplained, persistent, or severe muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor promptly — especially if you also feel feverish or unwell or notice dark urine. Because these effects are more likely at 40 mg, do not ignore them.
Yes, keep taking it long-term as prescribed — it controls cholesterol rather than curing it, and levels rise again if you stop. You should not drink alcohol while taking it, as alcohol adds strain on the liver and can worsen side effects.
Yes. Your doctor will check your cholesterol, liver function, and (at this dose) kidney function and muscle-related markers periodically. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, as some (certain antibiotics, antifungals, ciclosporin, and some heart medicines) increase the risk of side effects with rosuvastatin.
