How VIZYLAC CAPSULE 15'S Works

• Lactobacillus bacteria pass into the gut and settle among the bacteria already living there. They compete with harmful bacteria for space on the gut wall and for the nutrients both need, which limits how far those harmful bacteria can multiply.
• As they grow, Lactobacillus bacteria produce lactic acid. The gut becomes more acidic, and several bacteria that cause diarrhoea grow poorly in those conditions.
• The effect lasts while the bacteria are being taken and for a period afterwards. Probiotic bacteria do not permanently replace the gut's own population.

Vizylac is generally well tolerated. Wind, a feeling of fullness and mild stomach discomfort are the effects reported most often, usually in the first few days, and they normally settle as the gut adjusts. Because the capsule contains live bacteria, there is a small risk of serious infection in people whose immune defences are markedly weakened. This applies to patients on intensive chemotherapy, transplant recipients on high-dose immunosuppressants, people with advanced HIV infection, critically ill patients, those with a central venous catheter, and people with severe pancreatitis or short bowel syndrome. Anyone in these groups needs medical supervision before taking a probiotic. Diarrhoea that is severe, contains blood, comes with a high fever, or lasts beyond a few days needs medical assessment. Signs of dehydration in a child, including reduced urine, sunken eyes, unusual drowsiness or refusal to drink, need urgent attention. A rash, itching or swelling suggests an allergic reaction. The capsule should be stopped and medical advice sought.

• If you miss a dose of Vizylac Capsule, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

• Store the pack at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Heat and damp shorten the life of the live bacteria, so a bathroom cabinet or a shelf near the cooker is not a suitable place. Leave the capsules in their original pack and check the expiry date before use.

• Swallow the capsule whole with water and take it with or just after food
• Space the capsule a few hours away from any antibiotic, and ask the pharmacist for the right gap
• In diarrhoea, give oral rehydration solution first and take the probiotic alongside it
• See a doctor for diarrhoea that is severe, bloody, feverish or lasting beyond a few days
• Tell the doctor about any condition or treatment that weakens the immune system before starting
• Store the pack away from heat and moisture, which shorten the life of the live bacteria
• Check the expiry date, since the count of live bacteria falls over time

• The capsule can be taken with or without food. Taking it with or just after a meal reduces the wind and fullness some people notice in the first few days.
• Fibre from fruit, vegetables and whole grains feeds the bacteria already in the gut and works alongside a probiotic.
• Alcohol and hot drinks taken at the same time as the capsule are best avoided, since heat and alcohol reduce the number of bacteria that survive to reach the gut.
