The most important side effect is low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), especially if a meal is missed or delayed, with heavy exercise, or with alcohol. Warning signs include shakiness, sweating, hunger, palpitations, dizziness, and confusion. Others: nausea, stomach upset, and weight gain. Skin rash or itching can occur occasionally. Serious (seek medical attention): severe or prolonged low blood sugar (which needs urgent treatment); signs of an allergic reaction; and, rarely, liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine) or significant changes in blood counts. Report these promptly.
Take one tablet once a day with breakfast (or your first main meal), at the same time each day. Swallow it whole with water — do not chew or crush it, as this affects the slow release. Always take it with food to reduce the risk of low blood sugar.
Take it as soon as you remember with a meal on the same day. If it is almost time for the next day's dose, skip the missed one — never take two tablets at once, as this can cause low blood sugar.
Signs include sweating, shakiness, hunger, a pounding heart, dizziness, or confusion. Treat it promptly with a fast-acting sugar (glucose tablets, juice, or sugar), then have a snack or meal. Always carry a sugar source. If an episode is severe or you lose consciousness, it needs emergency medical care.
Limit or avoid alcohol. It can cause unpredictable and sometimes severe low blood sugar, and may cause flushing or feeling unwell with gliclazide. If you drink, do so in moderation and not on an empty stomach.
Yes — your doctor will monitor blood sugar (including HbA1c) and may check liver and kidney function. Use extra caution if you have liver or kidney problems, are elderly, eat irregularly, or are unwell, as these raise the risk of low blood sugar. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
