Generally well tolerated. Common: drowsiness or sleepiness, tiredness, dry mouth, and headache. Some people notice a stuffy nose or sore throat. Less common: dizziness, and, particularly in children, tummy upset. Serious (rare, seek medical attention): signs of an allergic reaction to the medicine itself (rash, swelling of the face/lips/throat, difficulty breathing); difficulty passing urine; or a fast/irregular heartbeat. Stop and contact a doctor if these occur.
Take one tablet once a day, preferably in the evening, with or without food. Swallow it whole with water — do not crush or chew it. Taking it in the evening helps limit any daytime drowsiness.
It is less sedating than older antihistamines, but it can still cause drowsiness in some people. Until you know how it affects you, avoid driving or operating machinery, and avoid alcohol, which adds to any drowsiness.
It can be used regularly for ongoing allergies as advised by your doctor. If your symptoms persist despite treatment, or you need it continuously for a long time, review it with your doctor to confirm the cause and best management.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as the dose may need lowering (it should be avoided in severe kidney disease/dialysis). Also mention if you have urinary difficulties or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Follow the correct lower dose for children as advised.
Usually yes, but avoid combining it with other sedating medicines or alcohol, and don't take it alongside other antihistamine-containing cold/allergy products without checking. Tell your pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you use.
