Most side effects are temporary and disappear as your body adapts to the medication. However, if these side effects persist or cause you concern, it is important to seek medical advice. Common side effects include:

General precautions and monitoring
Use under medical supervisionBefore initiating Omez, patients with alarm symptoms such as unintentional weight loss, recurrent vomiting, dysphagia, gastrointestinal bleeding, or anemia should undergo appropriate evaluation to exclude serious pathology.
This medicine can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing the gut motility and OMEZ 20MG CAPSULE 20'S decreases the acid production in the stomach. So, this combination is very effective in the treatment of reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal and stomach ulcers.
You should not take it if you are taking a medicine containing atazanavir and nelfinavir (used for HIV infection). Let your doctor know if you are suffering from any liver problems, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain or indigestion. Tell your doctor about all the other medicines you are taking because they may affect, or be affected by, this medicine. Inform your doctor if you have or ever had an allergic skin reaction with this medicine. It should not be given to children who are less than 1 year of age or whose body weight is less than 10 kgs. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before taking this medicine to avoid harmful effects on the baby.
Yes, it may cause diarrhea as a side effect in some people. This is usually not bothersome, but if you experience persistent watery stools that do not go away, along with stomach cramps and fever, get medical help immediately.
Take it for as long as advised by your doctor. The duration may vary depending on your condition. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor.
It can cause osteoporosis (thinning of bones) as it decreases the calcium absorption leading to calcium deficiency. This leads to an increased risk of bone fractures on long-term use, like hip, wrist or spine fractures. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (these can increase the risk of osteoporosis) before starting your therapy. Consult your doctor on ways to prevent this. Your doctor may advise you calcium or vitamin D supplements to reduce the risk.
If used for more than 3 months, certain long term side effects may be seen. The most important of these is low magnesium levels in your blood which may make you feel tired, confused, dizzy, shaky, or dizzy. You may also have muscle twitches or irregular heartbeat. If the use is further prolonged for more than a year, you may have an increased risk of bone fractures (due to decreased calcium levels in the blood), especially hip, wrist, or spine, stomach infections, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can make you anemic, as a result of which you may feel more tired, weak, or pale. Additionally, you may also have palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence (gas), or nerve problems such as numbness, tingling, and problem in walking.
It may cause vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. When taken orally, vitamin B12 requires an acidic environment for its absorption from the stomach while this medicine causes a decrease in gastric acid secretion. You may need to take vitamin B12 supplements along with it. The clinical significance of the decrease in vitamin C levels is not known, so vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.
Patients with cardiac disease can take this medicine as prescribed by the doctor. However, it can interact with certain drugs (e.g clopidogrel, digoxin) which might be used by a patient with an underlying cardiac disease. Patients taking these medicines together need to be monitored closely by a doctor.
Omez is a brand of omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Omeprazole works by blocking the proton pumps in the stomach lining that produce gastric acid, thereby reducing acid secretion and helping to treat acid-related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and erosive esophagitis.
Omez is commonly used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, peptic ulcer disease (stomach and duodenal ulcers), erosive esophagitis, and for the prevention and treatment of ulcers associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It may also be used as part of combination therapy to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection and in certain hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, as directed by a specialist.
Omez (omeprazole) selectively inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system, also known as the proton pump, in the gastric parietal cells. This enzyme is responsible for the final step in the secretion of hydrochloric acid into the stomach. By irreversibly blocking this pump, Omez significantly reduces both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion, leading to decreased acidity, symptom relief, and improved healing of acid-related mucosal damage.
Some patients may experience partial relief of symptoms such as heartburn within a few hours to a day after starting Omez, but the maximum effect on acid suppression typically occurs after several days of continuous use. For conditions like GERD or peptic ulcers, noticeable improvement may take 1–2 weeks or longer, and full healing often requires a treatment course of several weeks as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Short-term use of omeprazole-containing products is sometimes allowed for self-treatment of frequent heartburn in certain regions, but Omez specifically should be used according to local regulatory guidance and medical advice. Occasional, mild heartburn may be managed with lifestyle changes or antacids. If you feel the need to use Omez repeatedly, or if symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by alarm features such as difficulty swallowing, vomiting, weight loss, or chest pain, you should seek medical evaluation rather than self-medicating for prolonged periods.
Common side effects of Omez include headache, abdominal pain or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, and dizziness. These effects are usually mild and transient. If side effects are severe, persistent, or associated with warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rash, jaundice, or difficulty breathing, you should stop the medicine and contact a healthcare professional immediately.
Long-term or high-dose use of Omez and other proton pump inhibitors has been associated with certain risks, including vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), an increased risk of bone fractures in susceptible individuals, and a possible increased risk of gastrointestinal infections such as Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea. There have also been reports of kidney problems (including interstitial nephritis) and, rarely, lupus-like reactions. Long-term therapy should be periodically reviewed by a healthcare professional to ensure that the benefits continue to outweigh the risks.
Yes, Omez can interact with several medications. By altering gastric pH and affecting liver enzymes (particularly CYP2C19), omeprazole may influence the absorption or metabolism of other drugs. Clinically relevant interactions have been reported with certain antiretrovirals, some antifungal agents, clopidogrel, warfarin, phenytoin, diazepam, digoxin, and others. It is important to inform your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements you are taking before starting Omez so that potential interactions can be assessed and monitored.
Use of Omez during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be based on an individualized assessment by a healthcare professional. Available human data for omeprazole do not suggest a major increase in the risk of congenital malformations, but controlled data are limited, and non-pharmacological measures or alternative therapies may be preferred in some cases. Omeprazole is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. The potential benefits to the mother should be weighed against any possible risks to the infant, and the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration should be used if treatment is considered necessary.
Before starting Omez, inform your healthcare provider if you have liver disease, kidney disease, a history of vitamin B12 deficiency, osteoporosis or risk factors for bone fractures, electrolyte disturbances (such as low magnesium), or any history of severe skin or allergic reactions to proton pump inhibitors. You should also mention any alarm symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or chest pain, as these may require further investigation before or instead of starting acid-suppressive therapy. Do not use Omez as a substitute for medical evaluation of serious or persistent symptoms.
