How PIRITON CS SYRUP 100 ML Works

• Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the medulla of the brain and raises the threshold at which coughing is triggered, so an irritating cough becomes less frequent. At usual doses it has no pain-relieving or opioid effects. Its effect starts within an hour and lasts about 3 to 6 hours.
• Chlorpheniramine blocks H1 histamine receptors, reducing sneezing, runny nose and irritation of the nose and throat. It also has anticholinergic effects, which dry secretions and cause drowsiness.

Drowsiness and sleepiness are common. Dizziness, headache, poor concentration, clumsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, nausea, constipation and tiredness are also common. Children and older people may become restless, excitable or confused instead of drowsy. Less often, chlorpheniramine can cause urinary retention, palpitations, a fast or irregular heartbeat, rash, sensitivity to sunlight and, rarely, liver inflammation or blood disorders. Dextromethorphan can rarely cause hallucinations and abnormal movements, especially in children, and dependence has been reported in isolated cases. Allergic reactions with swelling, wheezing or difficulty breathing, severe skin reactions, a fit, or signs of serotonin syndrome, such as agitation, fever, sweating, shaking and muscle twitching, need emergency care.

• If you miss a dose of Piriton CS Syrup, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

• Store the bottle well closed below 30°C, protected from direct sunlight, as stated in GSK's prescribing information. Keep it out of the reach and sight of children, and do not use it after the expiry date.

• Do not give it to children under 6 years
• Measure each dose with the cup provided
• Avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines
• Do not drive or use machines if drowsy
• Do not take other cough, cold or allergy medicines with it
• Tell the doctor about asthma, COPD or any antidepressant

• No specific food interaction is known. Alcohol must be avoided, as it increases drowsiness. The syrup contains sugar.
