Composition
Atorvastatin is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include muscle or joint aches, mild digestive upset (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion), headache, and cold-like symptoms such as a stuffy nose or sore throat. Others: mild rise in blood sugar and occasional increases in liver enzymes (usually checked with blood tests). Serious (seek medical attention): unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness — especially with fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-coloured urine — which can rarely signal serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis); signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, or persistent nausea; or allergic reactions.
Take one tablet once a day, with or without food. Atorvastatin is long-acting, so it can be taken at any consistent time of day — morning or night — as long as you take it at the same time each day. Swallow it whole with water.
Usually yes. It controls cholesterol rather than curing high cholesterol, and levels tend to rise again if you stop. Continue taking it even if you feel well, and do not stop without talking to your doctor.
Avoid large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it can raise atorvastatin levels in your blood and increase the risk of side effects like muscle problems. An occasional small amount is generally fine, but check with your doctor.
Mild aches can occur, but report any unexplained, persistent, or severe muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor promptly — particularly if you also feel feverish or unwell or notice dark urine. Do not ignore these symptoms.
Yes. Your doctor will check your cholesterol to see how well it's working and monitor liver function periodically. Also mention any other medicines you take, as some (certain antibiotics, antifungals, and heart medicines) can interact with atorvastatin.
