How ASCORIL D JUNIOR SYRUP 60 ML Works

• Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the brain and raises the threshold at which the cough reflex fires.
• Chlorpheniramine blocks histamine H1 receptors, which eases sneezing, a running nose and itchy, watery eyes. It also reaches the brain, which is why it sedates.
• Phenylephrine narrows the small blood vessels in the lining of the nose, which reduces swelling and relieves a blocked nose.

Drowsiness comes from the chlorpheniramine and is the effect reported most often. The phenylephrine works in the opposite direction and can raise blood pressure and cause a fast heartbeat, restlessness or difficulty sleeping, so a child may be both sedated and agitated. Effects that need prompt medical attention include difficulty breathing, a widespread rash or hives, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, marked palpitations, or unusual sleepiness that is hard to rouse a child from. A cough that lasts beyond a week, returns after settling, or arrives with fever or breathing difficulty needs a doctor rather than a longer course.

• If you miss a dose of Ascoril D Junior Syrup, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

• Store the bottle at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. The storage instruction printed on the carton of the exact pack should be followed.

• Confirm with the doctor that this syrup is suitable for the child's age before the first dose
• Measure every dose with the cup, dropper or syringe supplied, never a kitchen spoon
• Check any other cough or cold product already in use, since many contain the same ingredients
• Tell the doctor about any heart condition, raised blood pressure, thyroid disorder or diabetes in the child
• Watch for a racing heartbeat or unusual restlessness as well as for drowsiness
• Keep the child away from cycling, roads and water while they are drowsy
