Chericof syrup is generally used for short-term relief of dry, irritating, or allergic cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections, common cold, or mild throat irritation. Because it often contains dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant), chlorpheniramine (an antihistamine), and phenylephrine (a decongestant), it can also help reduce associated symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and nasal congestion. It is not intended to treat the underlying cause of cough or serious respiratory conditions and should be used only under medical supervision.
Chericof syrup typically works through the combined action of its ingredients. Dextromethorphan acts on the cough center in the brain to reduce the urge to cough. Chlorpheniramine blocks histamine H1 receptors, decreasing allergic symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose, but it can cause drowsiness. Phenylephrine constricts blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling and congestion. Together, these actions provide symptomatic relief from dry cough and associated cold or allergy symptoms.
Use of Chericof syrup in children depends on the child’s age, weight, and the specific formulation. Many combination cough and cold syrups are not recommended in very young children due to the risk of serious side effects and dosing errors. Regulatory authorities in several countries advise against routine use of such products in children below a certain age. A pediatrician should always be consulted before giving Chericof syrup to a child, and the product label should be checked carefully for age restrictions and dosing instructions. Never estimate or guess the dose for a child.
Yes, Chericof syrup can cause drowsiness in many patients, primarily due to the presence of chlorpheniramine, a sedating antihistamine. Dextromethorphan may also contribute to dizziness or mild sedation in some individuals. Because of this, patients are advised to avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that require full alertness until they know how the medicine affects them. Alcohol and other sedating medicines can enhance this drowsiness and should generally be avoided.
Safety of Chericof syrup during pregnancy has not been established conclusively, and combination cough and cold products are usually avoided unless clearly needed. Some components, such as dextromethorphan and chlorpheniramine, have limited human pregnancy data, and phenylephrine may reduce uteroplacental blood flow at higher systemic exposures. A pregnant woman should not use Chericof syrup without explicit advice from her obstetrician or healthcare provider, who will weigh potential benefits against possible risks and may suggest safer alternatives or non-drug measures.
Dextromethorphan, chlorpheniramine, and phenylephrine may pass into breast milk in small amounts, and sedating antihistamines can potentially cause irritability or drowsiness in a breastfed infant and may reduce milk production in some women. Because of these concerns, Chericof syrup should be used with caution during breastfeeding and only if a healthcare professional considers it necessary. Short-term, lowest-effective-dose use may be considered in some cases, but close monitoring of the infant for unusual sleepiness, poor feeding, or irritability is important.
Alcohol should generally be avoided while taking Chericof syrup. Both dextromethorphan and chlorpheniramine can depress the central nervous system, and alcohol can significantly enhance drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. This combination increases the risk of accidents, falls, and other adverse events. In addition, alcohol can place extra strain on the liver, which is also involved in metabolizing these medicines. Patients should refrain from alcoholic beverages for the entire duration of therapy and for a short period after the last dose, as advised by their doctor.
Common side effects of Chericof syrup may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, mild stomach upset, nausea, or headache. Some people may experience palpitations, increased heart rate, or a slight rise in blood pressure due to phenylephrine. Less commonly, urinary retention, especially in men with prostate enlargement, or worsening of glaucoma may occur. Serious but rare reactions include severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling of face or throat, difficulty breathing), severe dizziness, confusion, or chest pain. Any severe or persistent symptom should prompt immediate medical attention.
Chericof syrup can interact with several medicines. Dextromethorphan should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI because of the risk of serious reactions, including serotonin syndrome and hypertensive crisis. Caution is also required with many antidepressants that increase serotonin levels, such as SSRIs, SNRIs, and certain tricyclics. Chlorpheniramine can add to the sedative effects of benzodiazepines, opioids, sedative antihistamines, and some antipsychotics. Phenylephrine may interact with drugs used for high blood pressure or heart disease. Patients must inform their doctor and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements they are taking before starting Chericof syrup.
If Chericof syrup is prescribed on a regular schedule and a dose is missed, it can usually be taken as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular schedule resumed. Double dosing to make up for a missed dose should be avoided. In case of accidental overdose, especially in children, immediate medical attention is essential. Symptoms of overdose may include extreme drowsiness, agitation, confusion, tremors, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, hallucinations, shallow breathing, or loss of consciousness. Emergency services or a poison control center should be contacted without delay.
Good service, cheaper medicine and better quality and effective.
