Montas L Tablet is generally used to manage allergy-related conditions such as allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes) and as an add-on therapy in asthma where allergies contribute to symptoms. It helps reduce inflammation and allergic responses in the airways and nasal passages.
Montas L Tablet usually combines montelukast and levocetirizine. Montelukast blocks leukotriene receptors, reducing inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production in the airways. Levocetirizine blocks histamine H1 receptors, decreasing histamine-mediated symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and runny nose. The dual action provides broader control of allergic symptoms.
No, Montas L Tablet is not suitable for the immediate treatment of acute asthma attacks or sudden breathing difficulty. It is intended as a maintenance or add-on therapy to help prevent and control allergy-related symptoms. For acute attacks, fast-acting inhaled bronchodilators prescribed by a doctor should be used, and emergency medical care may be required.
Levocetirizine in Montas L Tablet is a second-generation antihistamine with a lower tendency to cause drowsiness compared with older antihistamines. However, some individuals may still experience sleepiness, fatigue, or reduced alertness. Patients should observe how they react to the medicine before driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks requiring full concentration.
Safety of Montas L Tablet in pregnancy has not been fully established. Montelukast and levocetirizine have limited human data in pregnancy, and animal studies do not show major teratogenic effects at usual exposures, but potential risks cannot be ruled out. Use in pregnancy should be considered only if the expected benefit to the mother clearly outweighs any possible risk to the fetus, and strictly under medical supervision.
Both montelukast and levocetirizine can pass into breast milk in small amounts. Although serious adverse effects in breastfed infants are not commonly reported, data are limited. Montas L Tablet should be used with caution during breastfeeding, and only if a doctor decides that the benefits to the mother outweigh potential risks to the infant. The baby should be monitored for unusual sleepiness, irritability, or feeding difficulties.
Common side effects may include headache, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, abdominal pain, and sometimes nausea or diarrhea. These are usually mild and transient. If side effects are persistent, bothersome, or severe, medical advice should be sought. Any signs of allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, require urgent medical attention.
Montelukast has been associated, in rare cases, with neuropsychiatric events such as agitation, anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, abnormal dreams, depression, and very rarely suicidal thoughts or behavior. If a patient or caregiver notices any new or worsening mood or behavior changes after starting Montas L Tablet, they should contact a healthcare professional promptly and the need for continued therapy should be reassessed.
Montas L Tablet should be used with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment. Levocetirizine is primarily eliminated by the kidneys, so reduced kidney function can increase its blood levels and the risk of side effects. Montelukast is metabolized in the liver, so significant liver disease may alter its handling. Dose adjustments or alternative therapies may be needed. Patients with such conditions must inform their doctor before starting treatment.
Alcohol can enhance the sedative effects of levocetirizine and may increase drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired concentration. Combining Montas L Tablet with alcohol is generally not recommended. If alcohol cannot be avoided, it should be limited, and patients should be aware of increased risk of reduced alertness and avoid activities such as driving.
The duration of treatment depends on the underlying condition, severity of symptoms, and clinical response. Some patients may need short-term therapy during an allergy season, while others with persistent allergic rhinitis or asthma may require longer-term use. The decision on how long to continue should be made by a healthcare professional, and patients should not stop or prolong therapy without medical advice.
Montas L Tablet is often prescribed alongside other medications such as inhaled corticosteroids, bronchodilators, or intranasal sprays. However, combining multiple antihistamines or leukotriene receptor antagonists without medical guidance is not advisable. Patients should inform their doctor about all medicines, including over-the-counter products and herbal supplements, to avoid interactions and duplication of therapy.
