Headache, dry mouth, tiredness and drowsiness are commonly reported, along with abdominal pain, thirst and stomach upset. Drowsiness is less common than with older antihistamines but can still occur in some patients. Montelukast has been associated with neuropsychiatric effects, including agitation, anxiety, abnormal dreams, sleep disturbance, depression and, rarely, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, and carries a boxed warning for this in some countries. Any new or worsening mood or behaviour change should be reported to the prescriber promptly. A widespread rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty are signs of an allergic reaction and need immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy
Use only if clearly needed and prescribedData from human pregnancy exposure to montelukast are limited but have not consistently shown a clear increase in major congenital malformations. However, as with all medicines in pregnancy, Montek or Montek LC should be used only if the potential benefit justifies any potential risk to the fetus.
