Panazep is a brand name, while Clonazepam is the generic name of the drug. Both contain the same active ingredient and are used to treat similar conditions.
Panazep 12.5 contains paroxetine, an SSRI antidepressant, and is generally prescribed for the treatment of anxiety‑related conditions and depressive disorders. These may include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and major depressive disorder, depending on the doctor’s assessment. It may also be used for other conditions where paroxetine is indicated, such as obsessive‑compulsive disorder or post‑traumatic stress disorder, if deemed appropriate by a specialist.
Panazep 12.5 works by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood, anxiety, and emotional regulation. By blocking serotonin reuptake into nerve cells, it increases serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft, enhancing serotonergic signaling. Over time, this helps reduce symptoms such as persistent low mood, excessive worry, panic attacks, and other anxiety‑related symptoms. The therapeutic effect usually develops gradually over several weeks.
Some patients may notice mild improvement in sleep, appetite, or energy within 1 to 2 weeks, but full antidepressant and anxiolytic effects typically take 4 to 6 weeks or longer. Response time varies between individuals and depends on the underlying condition and dose. It is important to continue taking the medicine as prescribed and attend follow‑up appointments, even if improvement is not immediate. Any worsening of mood, anxiety, or emergence of suicidal thoughts should be reported to a doctor promptly.
Panazep 12.5 should not be stopped abruptly without medical advice, even if you feel better. Sudden discontinuation of paroxetine can cause withdrawal‑like symptoms such as dizziness, headache, irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, nausea, and flu‑like complaints. To minimize these effects, doctors usually recommend a gradual dose reduction over several weeks or longer, tailored to the individual. Always consult your prescribing physician before making any change to your treatment.
Common side effects of Panazep 12.5 include nausea, dry mouth, constipation or diarrhea, increased sweating, tremor, dizziness, drowsiness or insomnia, headache, and sexual dysfunction such as reduced libido or difficulty achieving orgasm. Some people may also experience weight changes or mild visual disturbances. These effects are often mild and may lessen as treatment continues, but persistent, severe, or bothersome symptoms should be discussed with your doctor, who may adjust the dose or consider alternative options.
Panazep 12.5 can cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or reduced alertness in some individuals, especially when starting treatment or after dose changes. Until you know how the medicine affects you, you should avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that require full concentration. If you experience persistent drowsiness or dizziness, inform your doctor, as a dose adjustment or change of timing may be needed.
Combining Panazep 12.5 with alcohol is generally not recommended. Alcohol can increase drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired judgment, and may worsen anxiety or depressive symptoms. It can also make it more difficult to assess how the medicine is affecting you. If you consume alcohol, discuss this with your doctor so that individualized advice can be given based on your overall health and treatment plan.
Use of Panazep 12.5 during pregnancy requires careful risk–benefit evaluation by a specialist. Some studies suggest an increased risk of certain birth defects and complications, particularly with first‑trimester exposure, and possible withdrawal or breathing problems in newborns exposed late in pregnancy. However, untreated severe depression or anxiety in the mother also carries risks. Do not start or stop Panazep 12.5 on your own if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy; consult your obstetrician and psychiatrist to decide the safest approach.
Paroxetine, the active ingredient in Panazep 12.5, passes into breast milk in small amounts. In many cases, it may be compatible with breastfeeding under close medical supervision, but the decision depends on the infant’s health, the mother’s clinical condition, and the availability of alternatives. Infants should be monitored for poor feeding, irritability, or unusual sleepiness. Any concerns should be discussed promptly with the pediatrician and prescribing doctor.
Panazep 12.5 should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within the recommended washout period because of the risk of serious reactions, including serotonin syndrome. Caution is required when combining it with other serotonergic medicines such as other SSRIs, SNRIs, certain migraine medicines (triptans), some pain medicines (like tramadol), and herbal products such as St John’s wort. It can also increase bleeding risk when taken with anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, or NSAIDs. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over‑the‑counter products, and supplements you are taking before starting Panazep 12.5.
Like other antidepressants, Panazep 12.5 has been associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in some individuals, particularly in children, adolescents, and young adults, especially during the first few weeks of treatment or after dose changes. Close monitoring by healthcare professionals and family members is essential during these periods. Any new or worsening thoughts of self‑harm, agitation, restlessness, or sudden changes in mood or behavior should be reported to a doctor immediately.
