Composition
Common: upper respiratory and other infections, headache, diarrhoea, raised cholesterol, and nausea. Because it suppresses immunity, it increases the risk of serious infections (including reactivation of tuberculosis and shingles). Serious (seek medical attention): signs of serious infection (fever, persistent cough, night sweats); symptoms of a blood clot (leg pain/swelling, chest pain, sudden breathlessness); and it carries warnings of an increased risk of serious heart events and certain cancers, particularly in older patients and smokers.
Take one tablet twice a day (or a once-daily extended-release form) exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Swallow with water. Do not stop or change the dose without your specialist's advice.
You are screened for tuberculosis and hepatitis before starting, and your doctor monitors blood counts, liver tests, and cholesterol during treatment. Keep all appointments.
Avoid close contact with people who have infections, keep up recommended (non-live) vaccinations, and report fever, persistent cough, or feeling unwell promptly. Tell your doctor before any vaccination.
Older patients, current or past smokers, and those with heart-disease risk factors or a history of clots or cancer have higher risks and need careful assessment. Tell your doctor your full history.
Do not drink alcohol, tell your doctor about all other medicines, and report leg pain/swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, or any new lumps or skin changes. Avoid live vaccines. Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
